4096 Code combinations of four-digit transponder code

An accepted definition of “digit” is the ten Arabic numerals 0 to 9. The “four-place” transponder code is octal containing only the Arabic numerals 0 to 7. Thus the total number of combinations is only 4096 (8 raised to the fourth power) vs. 10,000 (10 raised to the fourth power).
