It's not a waste of time for short haul flights. It's the stupid taxes, fuel surcharge and passenger duties that add on.

Hardly rocket science is it? I figured out that BA Avios was a waste of space back when they slashed the rewards about four years ago. Prior to that I'd been getting roughly enough points from each transatlantic flight to cover an economy return flight within Europe. After the change the points I earned from an 11,000 mile return flight costing over £900 could be bought using Tesco vouchers for about £10.

Having said that I did do quite well with Virgin Atlantic last year. Using a combination of flown mileage, a quite generous compensation points credit and points purchased with Tesco vouchers I did Las Vegas in Premium Economy for £345 return.

The bottom line is what we get now is nothing like the rewards available a decade or so ago. I was an AAdvantage Platinum member for several years in the early 2000s and that pretty much equated to one free economy return to the USA or the Caribbean via the USA for every two or three flown. On top of that you got the 500-mile upgrade 'stickers', which were very useful on internal US flights.
