We're probably going to have to agree to disagree here. It is not my perspective that what happened here was a recreation of a real slave auction. This classroom spent probably a half hour discussing what occurred at the actual slave auctions, then a few moments participating in what I suspect was hardly an authentic recreation of the auction. For starters, the children were able to participate in this auction from the comfort of their schoolroom. They hadn't just been kidnapped from their homes, forced to endure a voyage which many wouldn't even survive. They were not separated from their loving families then brutally inspected by potential buyers. They were (I assume) allowed to keep their clothing on and I also suspect they didn't undergo the "full" inspection I was taught really occurred in these auctions. At the conclusion of the "auction" they were allowed to go out to lunch, recess, and eventually home to their families. Comparing this school's demonstration to an actual slave auction, would be like comparing a paper airplane to the space shuttle in my opinion.

Now I'm going to go out on a limb with my own perspective and even some assumptions here. If the child was made fun of afterwards, I suspect it was not solely because of the auction demonstration. Kids are cruel - I'll grant you that. It wasn't this demonstration that encouraged kids to make fun of each other - it was probably kids being cruel - and THAT is what people should be outraged with. When kids are tormenting others for ANY reason, THAT is when parents and teachers should be outraged and ashamed of themselves. They're so very quick to blame others and not turn the microscope on themselves.

I stand by my original thoughts that kids should not only read about history. They should watch it, participate in it, demonstrate it, and not be shielded from anything. As bad as this child felt (for whatever the reason) I promise you it was a fraction of what the real pain of going through the actual event would be. If that is something that sticks with this child, his education will have been a success. Education and history are not simply happy times and unlimited success. Human history is filled with more torture and sacrifice than it is happiness and that's something that needs to be understood if we want to hope and work to better ourselves as a species.

Cheers,
Jim

Re: The Parking Lot Movie

We'll have to talk more about this in person! I've been making my hobby pay for itself (well, maybe just subsidize itself) for a few years now. I really enjoy wine - everything about it from the growing of the grapes to the tasting of the final product and how it evolves over the years. Part of this hobby started with visiting the local wineries and eventually I learned the business enough to become a "weekend warrior" for one. I work there one or two weekends, mostly in the tasting room, and with the pay and tips, it allows my personal collection to grow without hurting the wallet too much. It's a wonderful way to enjoy the hobby even more.

Re: http://www.jimhutchings.com/post/950276435

He was really cool - just hanging out there in the deserted gas station...
for a little while he was bobbing up and down and it looked like he was
dancing. This is why I really enjoy this site; because of the nuances between best/worst and favorite/least favorite, and then underrated and overrated. There are so many ways to look at these men and even my favorite president (Jefferson) can be considered overrated.

I just started following your site, so I apologize if this question has been asked, but it relates to my own feelings of Jefferson. He's a favorite President of mine largely because of his accomplishments as a Man. Which President do you think was the best person, in terms of accomplishments over his entire life?

Re: http://www.jimhutchings.com/post/797756723

Indeed.

Re: Taste of the Trail: Cabernet Franc and the Lehigh Valley - Part 2

Thank you Guest!

Re: Everyone Draw Mohammed Day – May 20th

That is certainly an interesting and valid perspective which I did not consider. I especially take note of the “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” part. Like Uncle Ben said, "with great power comes great responsibility." I still find it disturbing, though, that a community (even if intentionally marginalized) would seek to destroy those who are doing the marginalization. I also recognize that it's not the entire community threatening to kill the cartoonists and that there are many more people who (though offended) would not seek to kill or hurt the cartoonists. I do truly feel for those who are offended but don't seek to kill anyone. But I also submit that being offended or insulted or uncomfortable is sometimes part of life. Our currency has the words "In God We Trust" on it, which some might say targets and marginalizes atheists. Doesn't religion itself marginalize all other religions by saying its followers worship a false god?

This is a difficult topic, even more so with this new perspective. This planned day is, indeed, hurtful to many believers. I find that to be unfortunate, but that hurt stems from beliefs in which there are honest disagreements, and fundamental beliefs at the core of all people involved. How can this be reconciled though? I don't think that answer is to just decide to not offend anyone.

Communication and education should be the answer. Several hundred years ago MANY people were offended by the concept and theory that the earth was neither flat nor the center of the universe. People were killed because of that, but others continued to push those buttons and offend a large segment of the population. Was it uncomfortable? Absolutely. Is it exactly the same situation? Probably not ... but it's the best I can come up with at 1:30am and I think it has some validity. I definitely don't enjoy offending people, but I also believe that sometimes true enlightenment comes with a few bruises and hurt egos.

Re: http://www.jimhutchings.com/post/562179341

I've got to remember to send this one to Chris... The Internet is full of misunderstanding. And while true, the owner of that car (whoever it is) intended for everyone to see the complete display, the Internet (let alone our country) is full of people who are anything but "fair minded and reasonable" as you put it in the last comment.

It's the Hatfields and the McCoys, the Montagues and Capulets... that's humanity; there need be only one misunderstanding between groups and the grudge will last for generations until they can't even remember why. Anyone with Irish blood in them can tell a story I'm sure (to again paint a broad stroke). My defense of Langer is that by posting the picture, people might infer he is using that as an attack against a group to which this ignorant person belongs. Langer's complaint as I understood it was to be targeted at intolerant people in general and not to a group (unless you count Palin supporters as a group - which you certainly could - I'm sure that saying all Palin supporters are "homo haters" and abortion doctor killers is false). To requote Langer, "That they chose to advertise their religion in the same breath as this bullshit was entirely their choosing; the association was not in any way my intention. "

I think, perhaps, the problem can be helped by following the advice of a rather large bumper sticker I have seen: "Church and State: Keep them Separate."

Re: Jim Tumbls.: langer:
