My buddy Héctor lived around the corner on Jane street & became something of a regular when his marriage broke up. 1979, I believe it was. I'd just moved from East 13th street to West 15th, not far from La Tacita de Oro, but still saw myself as a Loisaida kinda guy. I never made it my own watering hole except to join him in commiseration. At last call he'd stack gin & tonics three-deep on the bar as the shutters went down, & I'd get sick pretending I wasn't doing any serious drinking by sipping after dinner liqueurs like Drambuie or Irish Mist. Maybe I'll find my way there when I'm in town.

Wilda, I know you're not one to throw figures around off the top of your head, but the last ballpark estimate I had wind of regarding our self-identified Puerto Rican diaspora population stateside (tempted to write 'in the lower 48' which might exclude the multi-generational semi-assimilated Boricua population in Hawai'i & the odd adventurer in Alaska or our 'fellow' Pacific territories) was not much over the four million mark. Where does that 5.2 million number come from? It got a big double-take out of me! Also, this got me curious-- & is, I believe, quite pertinent to the point of the article-- about recent figures tracking how much of this population actually participates in Metropolitan politics, whether electoral or more community based-- as you did during your 'tenure'. There's no coquito like coquito made with ron cañita-- pitorro, pitrinche: house distilled moonshine. I have an anecdote about making some for the Christmas party at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance when I was a student/gardener/factotum there in 1977 (78?) but it's long & full of classified info...¡Felicidades!

'Out of the ashes of AK Press' seems a little too...definitive. AK soldiers on, publishing & distributing, and are, I believe, as worthy of support in their (arguably) more narrowly-focused political niche, just as PM Press, in their broader radical culture coverage, are.

Thank you, makes me regret being out of town...one point: even in his filming of the 'Chushingura' (which admittedly I'm overdue for re-viewing) he elides most, if not all, of the obligatory action pieces to focus on the intricate and obsessive conspiring of the disgraced samurai, and the subsequent effects of their actions on the women linked to them. He manages to make an anti-war statement in the guise-- or through the pretext-- of a propaganda film. Chapeau!
