Transfer speeds are much less important than access time for general usage... and in that aspect, even a 50MB/s SSD will smoke the fastest mechanical drive.
As long as the transfer speed is fast enough for your needs - large, slower SSD will be great to replace a mechanical drive. Not as a primary drive, but as a storage medium.

Having said that, QLC... meh... like mentioned earlier by Branden in his comments... this is not a good direction for the industry.
But I can see myself using such cheap drive as an external drive, for example, used to transfer large files on the go. Once the price is good enough, no need for mechanical drive - it would be better to avoid it if possible.

Looking forward for a test with the A7S... very interesting - this confirms my suspicions regarding usable dynamic range on the GH4 based on the 'feel' of the footage after playing with the camera for a few days. If the A7S can maintain better results, even without the LOG profiles (as >3200iso is very limiting) - it would be my next camera.

It's a shame the BMPCC can't produce better results... without the DR advantage it's not competitive at all.

If that data is indeed true - it makes A LOT of sense.

It's a small sensor camera, and the choice to use a ~1mp sensor is actually beneficial to the overall image quality (noise ratio, dynamic range) if you ignore the actual resolution, which is low indeed for stills work.
This is very good for video and low-light performance but indeed, a bit worse for stills.
Having said that, how many of your tiny 5mp cmos chips with high signal noise and Bayer pattern actually do produce even a 2 megapixel worth of clean image data? AFAIK - NONE.

itinko - Video recording resolution has ALOT to do with camera's still ability. The 10MP sensor on your S95
isn't cropped for 720P video - it's line dropped and than resized - it takes lots of processing power, which is handled by a dedicated image processor (DIGIC 4, in your case). It ain't that complicated to understand why this situation isn't optimal for a general purpose computing device - unlike your shiny canon compact.

I got the hacked GH1 and I love it very much, asked a relative to buy it from B&H in NYC.
The last camera Eurocom imported was the G1, so I don't think we'll ever see GH2 officially here.

But where do you draw the line?

I'm sure for many people in Africa, even a 1K$ camera is too expensive.
So, in the same way, we can say that cellphone cameras democratisized film-making, and in a way - they are, as youtube did.

In my view, at least in my own local market - both RED and HDSLRS boosted the penetration of HD formats into the mainstream video making process and that's a good thing. HDSLRs continue from where RED stopped. But the revolution started with RED.

"Democratized" is maybe a bit stronger than what I would have said -
But Andrew, 20k$ for digital cinema camera, before HDSLR was introduced - is almost that.

However, It's over.

Red is very popular here in Israel, But I'm starting to see more and more 7D/5D productions, from big names – commercials that are being screened in prime-time TV and music videos for the biggest bands in Israel. And when I saw a very successful Israeli commercials director, shooting on a 7D with a Cooke lens, I knew RED will lose in the long-run.

They DO need to concentrate in the cinema industry, as HDSLRs will replace RED for just about every other purpose.
Also, I never believed in the Scarlet concept, as the community was craving for an HV20 replacement – A thing scarlet could never be in its price range. But a 7D/GH1 is – end of story.

I always joked with my friends that what I really wants is a Large Format camcorder... now its possible :)

We already got the lens/systems for a "sensor" in a similar size - 8X10 large format film. A true large format digital camera could be brilliant (while being so pricey I know I could never afford one). This can actually be used for a real product, but I agree that if its possible to do 60FPS in this size - A global shutter full frame sensor should be possible.

אכן, הזמן עובר מהר והטכנולוגיה מתפתחת בקצב מואץ.
הלייק עושה יותר, לדעתי, מלעזור לשתף במוצרים.
הוא מחבר בין פייסבוק כפלטפורמה מרכזית להפצת מידע, לשאר חלקי הרשת - בצעד, שאם יבוצע נכון, יעצים את כוחה של פייסבוק מול מנועי חיפוש כמו גוגל שמהווים ברירת מחדל לאיתור חומר ברשת.
בנוסף, השימוש בתקנים כמו open graph עשויים בהחלט לקדם אינטרנט קשור יותר, סמנטית. אמנם מצבנו רחוק ממושלם - הוא טוב בהרבה (אך חסר פרטיות כמנגד) מבעבר.

לא הייתי מגדיר אותו שמאלני *קיצוני* , אציין שאינני שותף לדעותיו.
פה הנקודה היא אפילו אחרת - מדובר במאבק על האמת ותו לא.
אין פה עניין של דעה, רק עובדות.
לדעתי האישית, אופי הלחימה נגדנו בחזית התקשורתית זהה לזו שבחזית הצבאית - אנחנו בצד של מגננה כנגד טרור לא הוגן.
ופליווד לא עוצרת בדבר כדי להעביר מסר. אינני יודע כיצד ניתן לנצח במלחמת ההסברה ברשת.
ידעו להתגייס אנשי המדיה החברתית לטובת העניין (אולי חלקם לצורך הפרסום האישי) במלחמה האחרונה - אך גם היום נדרשת עבודה אקטיבית כדי לשפר מצבנו ברשת.
אם מישהו מוכן לקחת את הנושא ברצינות, לתת מזמנו פעם בשבוע או פעם בחודש - אני חושב שאפשר לעשות שיתוף פעולה מעניין בין קבוצת בלוגרים, טכנולוגים ועוד לצורך הסברה ברשת. אפשר לדון בנושא, יכול להיות מעניין.

בהנחה ולא מדובר בתגובה שיווקית, אינני רואה הקשר בין החסרונות של הXP MODE לבין ההחלטה האם לשדרג ל7.
תוכנות שלא נתמכות ב7 לא תעבודנה פתאום כמטה קסם בעזרת אשף העברת מידע זה או אחר.
באם החומרה שלך לא תומכת בXP MODE ויש לך צורך בתוכנות שעובדות רק עם XP (או נתמכות רשמית רק בXP, לצורך העניין) - אל תשדרג ל7.

30 אלף דולר זה סכום די זניח בתעשיית הסרטים ועדיין אין ספק שהV-DSLR ישפיעו רבות על התעשייה - אנחנו כבר רואים שימוש שלהם בטלוויזיה (SNL, פרסומות ואפילו סדרות) ושמועות אומרות שגם בסרטים.
במקרה של V-DSLR יש לציין שההוצאה לא נגמרת במחיר הקיט -
אתה חייב מסך חיצוני טוב, אתה חייב מתקן נשיאה שמאפשר להרכיב FOLLOW FOCUS עליו (ואת המסך) - תוסיף מיידית 2000 דולר לריג טוב (לא כולל העלות של ציוד הסאונד, כי אתה לא יכול לחבר XLR ישירות למצלמה). אם אתה בא לצלם סרטון קצר (נניח וידאו קליפ) שניתן לסיים במספר מצומצם של ימי צילום - אפשר ואפילו כדאי לשכור מצלמת וידאו (EX3 של סוני למשל) עם אביזרים - זה לא יגיע למחיר של קניית מצלמת V-DSLR עם שלל האביזרים שהופכים אותה לברת שימוש. אם אתה מדבר מנקודת מבט של צלם שרוצה להתחיל לעבוד ולהרוויח כסף מהמצלמה אזי זו הוצאה אפשרית, אבל די עלובה למשהו שלא יכול לשמש אותך לארועים חיים כלל וכלל (אין continues auto-focus, רק לGH1 יש).
בקצרה - אכן, זה הדור הראשון של המצלמות. כרגע הוא לא הגיוני לשימוש למטרות רבות. זה כלי מושלם לצלם עצמאי שרוצה להוכיח יכולות אבל זה דורש ממנו לא מעט (כספית, והקרבה של נוחות שימוש). היתרון המהותי מבחינתי? יכולת לספק עבודות בתאורה נמוכה, שאף אחד אחר לא מסוגל לתת. ועדיין, זה limited market.
עבודה נכונה עם מספר מצלמות V-DLSR בחתונות בהחלט אופציה אפשרית שניתן להרוויח ממנה כסף, בעיקר כי צוות אחד יכול לספק גם סטילס וגם וידאו, ולתת תוצאות בתאורה נמוכה מבלי פנס 50 וואט בפרצוף של האורחים. חבל לי שלניקון אין מתחרה ראוי בתחום, כי עם כמות העדשות ניקון שיש לי מעבר לקנון יהיה קשה כלכלית. אני עדיין מקווה שפורמט ה4/3 יתפוס, ושפנסוניק תוציא את הGH2 - שיפור בחיישן ובקודק יהפוך אותה למצלמת וידאו מושלמת, שיכולה לקבל עדשות מכמעט כל סוג.

יכולות בתאורה נמוכה זה לא הכל.
הרבה יותר נוח לצלם עם רד (או עם כל מצלמת וידאו נורמלית), ואמנם הרגישות לאור של המצלמות הללו עדיפה - אם תצלם וידאו ברוו, הטווח הדינאמי לבדו מפצה לא מעט..
תוסיף על כך רזולוציה גבוהה יותר ובעיות קטנות יותר של rolling shutter.
רד עדיין כלי עדיף לסרטים בהרבה.

אני לא חברת הפקה, ולא בא לי להתעסק עם קבצים ברזולוציה של
4K
אם הייתי רוצה ליצור סרט עצמאי היום, והייתי צריך לבחור מצלמה בודדת עד טווח של 2000 דולר - זו הייתה 7די ללא ספק.

גם אתה מתלהב ממנה הא?

קנון צריכים להוציא מצלמת וידאו מבוססת על חיישן פול-פריים או חיישן עם קרופ פאקטור מינימלי ובגוף של מצלמת וידאו.
אם הם עושים את זה, במחיר סביר (עד 8 אלף דולר) ויש להם מתחרה רציני למוצרים מבית רד.

מקווה כאמור שיתנו גם שירות עסקי שיטפל במגבלות הללו, לא בכל סיטואציה שליחה חד צדדית של הודעות היא ספאם.
(למשל, לקוח משאיר לי מכשיר לטיפול במעבדה, סיימתי לתקנו - אני מעדיף לשלוח לו SMS עם מספר טלפון, בהנחה ורוצה לברר פרטים - הוא יתקשר למספר הזה. שירותי משלוח הודעות SMS בתשלום זו אופציה (שאני משתמש בה לעיתים) אבל עדיף מבחינתי שירות שנותן את מלא המכלול של השירותים - טלפוניה וSMS)
מעניין בשימוש בפועל, מה יהיה אחוז השיחות הנכנסות והיוצאות בעסק כמו מעבדת תיקונים.
הנושא יבדק :)
