I felt much the same my first year, I ended up stopping after a few months because nothing was looking like I wanted. I took a few other classes, I bought a book on drawing faces to work through in a sketch book that I didn't have to share with anyone. I did some bead & wire work, painted some small furniture pieces, anything creative counts as art in my book. I struggled so much with wanting my work to look just like the teachers. Then this year I took some of the taster sessions, and Laly Mille talked about learning your own artists soul. What things make you happy, what marks do you love etc. Now I get excited when I can use the teachers lesson but put more of myself into a painting. I'm very happy with most of my art now. It took me 4 years but it was worth it and the process was fun. Be easy on yourself! :)

I have some arthritis / weakness in my hands as well and I was worried I wouldn't be able to even do these little pots. My frustration was the gold leaf on this one, mine didn't look a thing like everyone else's. I sat with my little pot for awhile on my kitchen windowsill looking at it..... then I thought I was looking for little vessels to put my art supplies in because seeing them near my workspace makes me happy. I have bought a few soft pastels to play with and they are my favorite gorgeous teal, pink & orange plus white.. I put those inside my little pot and now it brings me joy. You can't see the gold leaf inside anyway and my pot has a purpose now.

I have some very old... 20 years or more cheap synthetic brushes that I still use for my gel medium and mark making. I honestly never throw one away. I don't have one of those huge soft ones or a catalyst blade so I'll be adding that. I do have some cool nylon pallet knives that I like. They are supposed to be for clay but you know mixed media artists don't like to follow directions.

Two are 6x6 one is 5x5. I just used a strip of paper i had left over from Laly's taster lesson on lifebook. And I just did 3. I don't follow directions well sometimes. :)

I agree with a lot of you, I loved the comment about staying in your comfort zone. As a new artist, I'm not even sure what my zone is yet, so going out of comfort to create art is stressful, kind of the opposite of what we are all trying to do in these already trying times. I think that statement really helped me not worry and I ended up loving my mini's!

What a ridiculous article! Lets stop a conservation effort that is gathering steam? Why? Starbucks just announced they will stop using straws in all their coffee shops. That's a pretty big deal. How in the world am I going to stop some third world country who is using giant plastic fishing nets?

It's a luminance colored pencil, you can buy singles at most art stores.

I've actually realized it's cheaper to buy my dog human grade food versus ready made treats. He adores organic carrot chips, bananas and in the summer watermelon and strawberries. Even organic stuff is cheaper per pound than most high end dog treats.
