thanks for writing this. i spent two months in europe by myself & i felt exactly this way. it was the first time in my life that i realized the world didn't revolve around me & it was humbling and sad and hard and beautiful. when other people talk about trips to europe, they just talk about getting drunk in hostels, so i felt very alone in this experience. thanks for sharing these lovely words.

For me, every story has its own song-- or, at most, maybe two or three songs. I listen to them one at a time on repeat for hours while writing. It creates a cohesive mood and rhythm for the whole piece and the repetition keeps it from being distracting. It's hard for me to write without it.

And lately I've mostly been using songs you've shared with me! That Sara Bareilles song, CoCo Rosie, Cougar, etc.

I think I can see how Animal Collective could be good writing music...

Ooh, I'm so excited! You know I love stuff like this. I wish we could chat about this over chocolate martinis, I'm sure we'd have an interesting convo.

I've struggled with this with the serialized stories on my blog (I'm working on a second one right now). It's hard to pace something when you're publishing it as you go! It presents interesting challenges.

I think you're definitely right about just writing out the whole thing and then going back and rewriting. I've finally gotten to a point with my blog where this is second nature. I write something fairly ridiculous and then I go back and spend several hours working and reworking it, rearranging the pieces, adjusting the tone, writing better jokes, etc. Man oh man, "writing is rewriting" sure is true.

really powerful and i love the aesthetic.

the performances were interesting-- it sounded like they were recording very quietly, so no one in the next room would hear.
