It is, but most of the condo developers who are building in the area have had lots of complaints, not just from actual owners/tenants, but also from realtors and house inspectors--walls with little insulation for sound, or sub-par building materials for their cabinets and countertops.

Despite that, the area is quite nice. I'd buy a place there if the workmanship were also there.

Not sure if an outsider's opinion would help, but it took me six months to find my current position at BCIT. Don't feel down and keep at it, even if your mom doesn't think highly of artistic careers (I got the exact same reaction from my parents as well).

I love the overall UI and its active tiles concept. From what I understand, you can resize the tiles (which distinctly sets it apart from Apple). Being able to shrink your different 'desktops' to see all of them at a single glance is pretty neat as well, instead of swiping from desktop to desktop (aka Apple and Motorola Xoom). I'm also fond of the sidebar that you can drop into the same workspace while you're working, which is pretty neat. And the interchangeable keyboards and built-in kickstand are pretty well-thought of as well.

However, I do see some learning curve issues--particularly if you've grown up using traditional Windows (desktop) products (up to Windows 8) and expect it to behave the same. All of the review videos I've seen to date seem to suggest that it behaves much differently from the latest OS (but if you've used Windows from 3.1 all the way up to Windows 95, then Windows XP and then to Windows 8, then I suppose the drastic change in UI wouldn't be surprising :)).The immediate downside I see is the lack of software for the Surface but like all new technologies, this area would proliferate itself over time. The other one is the price--it's a bit more expensive but you do get more space (smallest model starts at 32GB as opposed to one-size 16GB for Apple). The Motorola Xoom shares the same space (32GB but expandable up to 64GB) but it's slightly cheaper and shares some similar aspects to the Surface.

Another downside is the weight--having an iPad 2, it's heavy for one arm over an extended period of time. If you intend to use the Surface as an eBook reader, it's gonna be heavy like the Xoom. The screen surface area for both the Surface and Xoom are larger though, so perhaps that contributes to the weight.

Lastly, I'd base your tablet purchase on how you plan on using it. I know you mentioned travel and I was able to use my iPad fine for Europe--but my biggest complaints from a usability standpoint included the weight (iPad is the lightest between the Xoom and the Surface), and the lack of a tactile keyboard (I didn't bring a keyboard peripheral with me as it would've added to my overall messenger bag weight).

If I hear more or can get my hands on the Surface, I'll keep you updated!

Ouch. I thought I had it rough when my grandmother was hospitalized two and a half months ago, but it must be so different to have that happen to a parent.

I'm not us if my perspective helps but up until now, my immediate family, myself, and my aunt and uncle have spit the care of my grandmother into manageable shifts to make sure that all meals are covered (as she still needs assistance). Usually we plan out what day(s) we think we'll be able to help and draw up a visitation schedule based on that. Some weeks it may mean coming in for one day a week whereas others have meant a greater sacrifice.

It's a pretty big adjustment and I'll admit that it is a huge challenge to your day-to-day life at times, but the only thing we can do is our best.

I wish you were still here in BC! Jenn is awesome to work with--she was unobtrusive during the ceremony and grabbed some amazing shots that I wasn't able to get. I totally recommend her, whether you're a bride looking for a photographer or as a photographer looking for an extremely reliable second shooter.
