Can you verify your xmlrpc server is up and running? you can enter the URL
in your browser and look for something like
"XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only."

I've never tried these modules on Drupal 6. It seems both JS math and mathfilter have port for drupal 6 and are actively maintained. Hopefully JS math works out for you.
