Outside of tour companies ( particularly those doing Urban adventures) and activity / itinerary sites (Viator.com, Nileguide.com / TripIt.com etc), there's also opportunity for digital content providers who offer walking tour podcasts, running guides, the list goes on.

Integration of video content would be good and will no doubt turn up and what would a maps mash app be without 'build your own walking tours' shared throughout the social sphere.

I'll stops salivating over the computer now....

Re: Peter Kim, Charlene Li & Jeremiah Owyang on Why Social Media Fails at Web 2.0 Expo | SocialComputingJournal.com

Nice overview Mia, thank you.

One of the only things I disagree with is the title - It's not social media failing, it's the inability of corporations to understand how to harness social media as means by which to 'engage'. Whether it be customers, partners or even internal stakeholders the focus, in my mind at least, is how to use these channels to engage.

By setting even basic goals/tasks up front, for example

- I want to learn more about my customers through engaging
- I want to understand how they feel about my brand / service
- I want to determine what improvements to make
- I want to make those changes
- I then want to communicate back to the community

then companies can choose the appropriate channel, gather the right data and then implement solutions that can be measured.

I know that's a relatively simplistic view of one use of social media, but as jebworks stated in his comments below, sometimes you need to keep it simple, not over-complicate, engage ( not advertise) and then learn as you go along.

Measurement tools can be as simple as your own analytics programs, feed readers for brand / sentiment tracking etc or up the ante with something like Radian6 - which has launched an excellent service.

Re: Public Relations Tools

Although we haven't used any clipping service, we have used PRWeb as a means to push our releases out to a global audience. You can select which countries you want to go to and the tracking is good. Everything is set-up online and you can upgrade to get a podcast recorded on your release. Not really what you asked for but I thought I'd throw it in anyway.
