You asked if you were missing something so here are a few thoughts: According to the Assessors web site the SKFR EMS rate for 2009 is .32/1000 AV, so if your home was worth say....$740,000 you will pay $237.00 in 2009 for EMS services. SKFR listed about 9500 calls for service in their annual report and says that calls for help have increased about 4% each year. For the same level of funding as you suggest, you will not get the same service, it will get worse and worse...so the question is, how long is too long for you to get advanced or basic life support when you or your family needs it? The article states that response times are increasing, I want a better response than 14 minutes to my emergency and I don't want to see the stations at Banner, Glenwood and others closed. I would rather pay a little more and get a status quo on response times and perhaps a slight improvement especially in the Manchester area. Check it out, I think you'll see it, and join me in voting yes for our EMS.

Re: Why can't SKFR just ask for an extension? - Port Orchard Independent

Even after the vote to support SKFR EMS levy at .50/1000 AV we will all be paying less than any surrounding community for the same type of service. Belfair, Bremerton, NK, Poulsbo are all at .50/1000 AV (check the county web site) SK is more like the rest of Kitsap county and the .50/1000 AV is a reasonable thing to do, if it dosn't pass it all goes away. There is no real way to "extend" the current amount of service without increasing the resources....this is about basic service levels just like the other Kitsap communities, I will be supporting this because it is the right thing to do especially in these hard times, now more than ever!

Re: Fire chief's threats not appreciated - Port Orchard Independent

Mr. Gaylord,

You sound like an honest and caring person. I called SKFR and asked them a lot of questions. They answered all of my questions and I think the chief is an honest and caring man too. I now believe that SKFR had a duty to inform us of the effects of a no vote, to do otherwise would have been negligent. The definition of a threat doesn't include factual information that has a negative effect, its just bad news! The status quo I am concerned with most is value. We in SK pay the lowest taxes in the county, SKFR has the highest number of EMS calls and lowest number EMT's per population served. This small increase allows SKFR to maintain service levels and improve response times to a level that they can make a difference when I have my heart attack or my grand baby stops breathing. Even with a yes vote for EMS we in SK will still have the lowest tax rate! Call the chief and talk to him, blogs are fun but no substitue for talking to a real person!

Re: Fire levy a small price to pay for peace of mind - Port Orchard Independent

Sally I agree with you!

And as for seewithxrays, well you must be looking at a lead wall because you dont see the obvious! SKFR has the lowest rate of fire and EMS tax (check the county web site) and they have the most 911 calls in the county, yet they have the lowest ratio of Firefighters to population....guess this doesn't fit your drivle but it is the truth, try educating yourself before you shoot that spit wad!

Re: SKFR resorting to scare tactics again - Port Orchard Independent

Dave,

Your house was valued at $236,150 in 2008 and you paid $70.81 or .30/1000 AV for EMS, for 2009 your house was valued at $226,640 and you will pay $72.52 for EMS or .32/1000 AV. If the EMS levy passes at .50/1000 AV you will pay an increase of approximately $113.32 a year or $40.80 a month or 11 cents a day. My goodness, we pay 42 cents every time we mail a letter and we are talking about 11 cents a day for life saving measures here, the basic service that every community deserves and needs. This economy down turn doesn't mean we should turn our backs on helping people who happen to have a car accident or a heart attack or a stroke! You say " What happens to keeping our current service and current levy amount?" Well that seems obvious, SKFR is the busiest department in the county and has the least amount of people to do that job. As calls increase and resourses stay the same, response times get longer and longer. The POI reported that response times to the Manchester area are approaching 14 minutes, the .50/ 1000 AV maintains the status quo in service levels and improves the response times and it costs you 11 cents a day, get real and join me in voting yes for EMS!

Re: Fire district needs to lower its sights - Port Orchard Independent

Roger,

There is a lot one can find out through the web. and its free You are a frequent letter to the editor writer and blogger. None of your previous articles have in any way been positive and usually your material is riddled with mis-stated facts, false accusations and anti- everything rhetoric. Let's review your latest article posted above: you say "this is a 65% increase" Wow! Really? That is a big number!!! But anyone with a brain asks themselves, a percentage of what? You see we know when numbers are small the percentage increase is not a good way to quantify the difference. So lets look at your tax statement from the county web site, your home was assessed in 2008 for $236,450 and you paid $70.34 or .30/1000 AV for your EMS portion of the fire tax. I notice that you paid less tax in 2008 than in 2007, but I didn't see an article or letter proclaiming this important event? In 2009 your AV went down to $227,010 and your EMS portion of the fire tax will be $72.64 or .32/1000 AV. If the EMS levy passes this year, your approximate EMS tax for 2010 would be $133.51 a year an increase of $40.87 or $3.41 a month or 11 cents a day. This meager increase allows SKFR to maintain the status quo in terms of response times, not money. SKFR isn't threatening you, it is the truth-accept it and join me in voting yes for EMS!

Re: Chief says levy failure would be devastating to SKFR - Port Orchard Independent

OK I get it! You are a disgruntled ex-county cop who can't pay for basic services....crawl back under the rock you came out from seeswithxrays, you are not being truthful and just kicking up dust , causing distracions from what is really important and that is adequate EMS response times. You need therapy, sorry SKFR doesn't provide that service, but your local Pastor may be up for the exorcisim!

Re: Chief says levy failure would be devastating to SKFR - Port Orchard Independent

Blueschroder, if 5 dollars a month makes you lose your house for back taxes then you have more problems than an EMS levy, get real and quit trying to dumb down this community to the point that no one will want to live here! This is an essential service and we must support it! We still enjoy the lowest taxes in the county even after we approve the EMS levy!

Re: Chief says levy failure would be devastating to SKFR - Port Orchard Independent

SKFR runs nearly 9500 calls a year (see their web site www.skfr.org) and response times are over 14 minutes to populated areas. When its my family I want a response to my emergency faster than that! As far as the money goes, well SK pays far less than any other like community for EMS...the county Assessors site shows the 2009 rates, go look! NK, Bremerton, Poulsbo,..at 50 cents per thousand ( Belfair and Gig Harbor too) Its unlucky that SK's levy happens to run out now, but we need this service now more than ever! As for me and my firends and family, we are voting YES!!!!
