Sorry! Finally got down to figuring this out. The app is hosted on heroku and basically I have busted the rows limit for the free PG database and hence the failure (write access was revoked for this db). Since it's just a toy app, I don't think I'll be upgrading the db though. But a part of the app is actually available as a gem: https://github.com/winston/....

I think that's because I am stuffing the env var into `.bash_profile` though.

Hmm.. Could be because the saved objects are already different from the default JSON serializer. Just a guess.

You can pass `JSON` as the second parameter to have it serialize into `JSON`.

In fact you can even write your own custom serializer, if you want your column in other "formats".

ActiveRecord::Base has a `serialize` class method. Not what you looking for?
