I worked for a summer at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village a few decades ago–a young student in heritage carpentry. Was a magical place then, and now, reading in my home in Iraq, all that magic rushes back.

Re: On Asthma and Ferguson

(wept from beginning to end)

Re: The Red Couch: An Altar in the World (Prayer: Then and Now)

Would be lovely if that worked out someday :)

Re: Where Grace Reigns

It's amazing how injustice has the power to do this. You've brought up so many issues to think about. But the one that's resonating really loudly for me is the profound immenseness of white privilege, particularly when we're abroad. I keep thinking about your student's words..."You're English." I wonder if his reaction would have been the same if you'd been dark-skinned and wearing a hijab? There is still this strange thing that comes with whiteness. People are willing to suspend their suspicion/distrust.

So many other things you bring up. I'm just really grateful to see you here.
Peace

Re: The Red Couch: An Altar in the World (Prayer: Then and Now)

My experience of prayer has changed vastly over the years, as my theology changed, as my experience in the world changed. And I have to say, it continues to evolve. Living where I do, my days are punctuated with the calls to prayer, and I'm grateful for those moments! Drawing my mind and my heart back.

Re: Celebrating Eid, Celebrating Forgiveness

I love the Eid greeting (though I can't say it myself, yet) asking for forgiveness for any hurt over the past year and asking for a clean slate. It's said so quickly and automatically that it's not exactly a time for reflection and response...but for those who want and those who need, it makes an opening.

Re: September Zine: Nashville + Sisterhood + Autumn

i'm going to miss Rachel's voice here. There are so many more opportunities for people, outside of traditional streams. I'm sure Justin will find a way that works for him.

Re: In Tech, on Waves, in Space…Good News for Girls

You're right, Bev. I think there's something powerful that happens when we celebrate each other's achievements. I've bought mostly used clothes for decades, because of the environmental impact of clothing production. The cost (environmental and human) is just so high, I hope help get as much use out of a garment as possible.

Sourcing clothes from ethical companies is definitely a western privilege. One of those things I never thought about before...

Re: Closing the Confidence Gap

Your post and Bethany's have both felt like serious punches to the gut this week. I leave the posts open in my browser and dip back in when I screw up the courage. None of the government workers (including the military who are defending the border against IS) have been paid in months, yet they still find ways to give. The need is simply too great for them to handle alone.

And many, many Muslim clerics and leadership have spoken out against IS. I'm very sad to hear that that hasn't hit the Canadian media.

Peace.

Re: The Murmuration of the Body

Amen and amen...

Re: The Murmuration of the Body

So wild to see this, Holly. You seem to live in the way of immersion, and I can only imagine that when you rearranged your bulletin board and book shelves, it might have felt like you were losing a bit of yourself.

I also know that you sow good seed along the way. And while this project won't grow in the way that you'd hoped, your way of being has spread seed as you've come along this path. Something different will grow, tended by someone else, perhaps, that wouldn't have existed were it not for your seed-spreading ways.

None of this diminishes your embarrassment. I realize. I'm grateful that even in this you shine. We all need friends and leaders who are transparent when it is most difficult.

The end of your project is no failure. The time you invested is growing something.

Re: New book on Niagara's 'flavourful bounty' | St. Catharines Standard

I can't imagine anyone better suited to write about Niagara's amazing agricultural past and present.
