Sony Moving Forward With Venom Spin-Off!

As much as I agree that Hollywood seems to be focused on villains right now, there really are still no villain stand-alone movies. Even in Batman, the Joker held a significant amount of focus, but it was always kept in proportion to Batman's story arc, personality, and character development. Having said that, I would LOVE to see a true villain's story told with as much effort as was put forth by Christopher Nolan; then again, as much as I really do love Sam Raimi, he just doesn't have the same kind of focus on his movies as Nolan, taking a much more hokey approach (as we're all aware from his Evil Dead movies' influence on the Spiderman series).

Beyond all that, the Joker is one of the only villains (besides maybe Lex Luthor, who has always deserved a better actor in any Superman movie/show) I can think of in comics that really stands opposite from a major superhero, which is 100% necessary IMO to develop a full, engrossing story. If someone is to play Venom, Topher Grace as great as he is just won't be the right choice. Best option? Probably someone fairly unknown, or at least up-and-coming/out-of-the-spotlight (i.e. Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, etc.). As far as character design goes, it seems fairly hard to go wrong with getting Venom right, as long as he's menacing, malicious, and maligned.

I might end up writing a full article on this now! Can't wait for your full editorial...

Re: Your passwords are showing…

If you're in an environment where you're this concerned about someone sitting down at your computer and stealing your passwords there are a few things to consider:

1. It's probably time to have a discussion with this person who you think will be stealing passwords.
2. If you don't know the person and are just careless enough to leave your computer open, chances are the person who wants to steal your passwords knows a better way and can get around this system (I can think of plenty of apps and methods to steal passwords that are in fact more efficient and faster than this method).

What situation would this be useful in? This is like a prescription drug, it just cures the symptom. In reality, we should be trying to get people less reliant on their computer remembering their passwords and not writing them down on little sticky notes that are posted on their monitors.

Re: Babylon A.D.'s Mathieu Kassovitz Opens Up About Fox Negatively

FOX has demonstrated itself consistently over the years as the moronic younger sibling of the movie & TV industry. Not only do they increasingly produce worse & worse TV shows that often get canceled within 13 episodes, they cancel even the good ones (Arrested Development, anyone?). It's so sad, to see such a great director the likes of Kassovitz abandon even his own artistic production. More so, it's angering to know that they stepped in & on his production with such reckless abandon. What's the point of hiring someone to paint your house if you constantly grab their brush and do everything for the? And don't even get me started on FOX News...

Re: Inbox Taming for Busy People

I would recommend checking out Mark Hurst's book Bit Literacy on this same topic as well.

Re: How to Create an Effective Site Map for Your Web Site

Don't really have a suggestion, I'm more so just curious as to why you're creating a site map this way (if at all). You look at companies like Flickr, 37signals, Carsonified, Digg, etc. and you see it all over the place. On the other hand, I look at companies like Facebook and Myspace and, to be honest, don't see play at all. Have you ever watched an interview with Mark Zuckerberg? It's like someone sucked the life out of him at Harvard and then told him to start an online revolution, but be careful, you can't emote!

I'm a fresh college graduate so right now I can feel this being a crucial moment in my life where I decide how much work vs. play I do. Personally, I just do play for my work since I love it so much and love experimentation! (I'm a designer). Unfortunately, a lot of students that I graduated with did not have this same philosophy.

On that note, I think play involves a higher amount of self-awareness and confidence than usual. Many people I know lack a significant amount of self-awareness, and considering that public speaking is the #1 fear of this country's citizens, confidence seems to be an issue as well.

Re: Startups: your web site sucks

What's even funnier after reading this (legitimate) tirade is that sites like Semantifind undoubtedly read this as well and changed their sites accordingly.

Re: Growing New Crops

One site comes to mind: Hulu.

Beyond that, at least a lot of these big companies you speak of are at least trying now; albeit, mostly by just devouring the companies (e.g. CBS bought last.fm, etc. etc.).

Re: Gatekeepers vs Gatejumpers

First, I agree with G. Wayne Clayton mostly, except I think Mapquest would be considered the GateJumper of any regular map you'd buy at a gas station and then Google Maps would be the next GateJumper. This brings up another great point: what does it take for a GateJumper to be GateJumped?

Beyond that, I don't think ABC/CBS/NBC were replaced by Youtube or Blip.tv. Those two examples, to me, seem to be almost in a league of their own. I would say something like Revision3 is truly the GateJumper to ABC/CBS/NBC.

Re: Gatekeepers vs Gatejumpers

After reading some more of these now, how do you quantify (not qualify) gatejumping? Is there a certain point when you say, "Yup, that gate has been jumped now." Just because a company like meebo exists doesn't mean it's necessarily any better than standard IMing which is still used much more heavily. Or Rob Jacobs' examples above about schools being jumped by the world, which is hardly true considering people have learned from the world and school at the same time for thousands of years. Virtual classrooms have enabled more as well, but are they really "jumping" the gate per se?

Re: Final Twilight Movie Poster Is Both Mysterious And Expressionless

More like "Nothing good will come of this movie."

Honestly, I remember seeing a sneak scene of it months back and it looks absolutely atrocious.
