Funny....my husband and I were just discussing this same subject. Wary of a negative reaction, we haven't worked up the nerve to ask the local gas stations why the prices are so much higher here than in Oak Harbor...I still remember the story of a customer who "dared" to ask the owner of a local station.......after having one too many customers ask that same question in one day, that customer was told to fill-up elsewhere :-)
I'd be very interested in getting a reasonable explanation.

"Clearly", I should have clarified so as not to oversimplify my position or give the impression I'm not educated on the dangers of STDs.....prostitution should be legalized and regulated as in Nevada.

We will never be able stop prostitution but you can monitor and test the participants. Just being realistic and as always, just my opinion. Oh and BTW, I don't "hook-up" with just anyone...just ask my husband. :-)

Yup, I'm well aware. Went to Vegas this past August....interesting place. Learned some interesting things too.

To be in business a brothel must be licensed (not sure what you mean by certified....I've never heard that term before) in the state of Nevada and prostitution is not legal whatsoever in Clark County (Vegas).....the women who are licensed are all tested regularly.

From the articles I've read and the folks I've taked to, the majority of prostitutes in Nevada prefer to work in a brothel if they can...much safer, more money and getting arested isn't an issue. And I have to recheck my sources but I understand that since the testing was started back in the 80's no licensed prostitute has ever come up positive with HIV.

Again, just my opinion on this whole thing...I'm not trying to change anyone's mind...just thought it was an interesting way to spend tax money is all.

Oh goody! More fees from the county...doesn't surprize me they were passed by Democrats.

Just another government program that starts under the guise of "environmental stewardship" but in the end they're all the same...another way for the county and state to get our money.

I DID read the article and I'm sorry that you think my comments inane but I stand behind them. The county government has at times shown itself to be ineffective and inefficient. They, like the rest of us are already doing, need to find a way to get by on what they have or even less. If I raised my prices right now just because my business is slow, I'd lose the customers I have left. Just my opinion...sorry you don't like it or agree with it.

Just checked mine....HOLY MOLY! How could my value jump $44,000????? The only sale in the neighborhood was in last September...and before that was the begining of 2007. I only WISH I could sell my house for what they say I should pay taxes on.....what a joke.

Hey 2much,
I too have had issues with the woman who comes out to the house every year to "measure" my foundation (I insisted they not look in windows...which I was told by her boss is "not policy"). She must get a lot of grief from homeowners cuz I've never seen her in a courteous mood.

I sure hope this isn't the reason for the hike in value but I wouldn't be surprised. The husband and I are already figuring out what it will take to get it reviewed......grrr. Just another thing to deal with in order to keep gooberment in it's place (out of our wallets).

Good for them! I'm happy to see them looking for ways to save some jobs and some money. I wonder when they'll stop letting employees drive their county vehicles home every night? That could be another way (of many) to cut some costs...just a thought.

You saying WhidbeyIslander is "brainless" is quite different from saying people in government like to take our money. Your comment was personal and uncalled for.

I haven't heard of any official or employee offering to give back anything. But I have been "informed" by newspapers like the Record of the opposite...... various departments and officials holding out their hands, wanting more tax money to fund services. Show me where I can "inform" myself about government officials wanting to give back any salary or tax money. Unless you count some governors who don't want to take the stimulus money...but that's a whole other topic.

Both very good ideas. I'd like to hear some more ideas of how to cut the county budget from citizens. Does anyone know how to go about getting an actual copy? Is it available in detail online?

I've said this before but I'd like to see county vehicles not made available to employees to drive to and from home. Gotta start somewhere....

I can read an article and use my brain....this is what it comes down to for me: I am tired of giving the county more money that I don't have for services that can be trimmed down for the time being. That is my point. :-)

Wow. I've read all the posts and they really gave me some things to think about.
I'm am quite happy to live on the South end of the Island for many of the reasons listed above BUT I was kind of thinking of Oak Harbor like this: The folks in the Navy are like houseguests...some are very well-behaved and others not so much. Some you're glad to see go and others will be missed. Simple fact is that it doesn't look like the Navy is going anywhere. And if it did what would happen to the economy of Oak Harbor? This is a serious question I'm asking here and I'd love some input from folks who have studied the possible outcome of the Navy leaving O.H.

I'm with you Beth...after catching my new (transplanted from CA) neighbor's dogs trying to get at my chickens I simply told them that they should be careful since I've know of dogs getting shot for the same thing...that it's differnet here than in the city, with different rules.

Of course now I'm know as the evil woman who threatened to shoot their dogs. Some people don't get it.

Holy cow! Now all I have to do is picture Oak Harbor without that amount of money the Navy injects there.....scary. Businesses would definitely close. Doctors would leave due to lack of patients. And I'm sure the schools would be effected....very interesting info. Thanks for the link Chuck.
