With G/Maps and predicted travel time estimates there is no excuse, even in a busy City like SF. Must be my military background.....

Re: fitness truths the five biggest fitness myths debunked

Spot on - I road race but have minimal time to train midweek so do 3 high to v. high intensity workouts on the bike of around 1.5hrs each - hitting VO2 max and maintaining anaerobic HR for extended periods - the result - consistent weight loss and fitness...with the side benefit of being able to eat whatever I want!

Re: Why Your Startup Doesn’t Need a COO

Having been a COO at a start-up I concur. My role was to manage the non-technical/product functions, i.e. marketing, sales, BD, operations, finance, working with the founding-CEO who was v. technical and product-focused. Worked fine for a while, but as the team grew and we hired functional leaders/experts in sales, marketing, etc. it became harder for them and the people who reported to them to understand who was the key decision maker - me or the CEO. Knowing that this was an issue I devolved myself of responsibility as we hired VP's - i.e. they reported to the CEO, and I ended up running admin, finance and operations - which is not what I signed up for - so left and in doing so believe the company was stronger for it. So in a nutshell a start-up doesnt need a COO, its needs strong, competent lieutenants in key functional roles and CEO who is willing and capable of wearing multiple hats.

Re: Keirin Speed Racers

The last edition of 'Rouleur' has a great article on Keirin.

Re: Productivity Hacks: Voicemail, Folders & To-Do’s

I use a slightly modified version of the email hack with Gmail - I only leave messages that I need to respond to in to the Inbox, everything else goes into the Archive folder. Once a week I scan the Archive folder and 'promote' things as needed.

Another hack I find useful (Mac) is eliminating folders for files. The search functionality is far quicker then navigating folders and it saves me a ton of time as every file just sits at the top level of my Documents folder. The only hurdle is to use a good file naming scheme.

Re: Hasn't It Always Been About Status?

For status to be truly conversational someone need to figure out how to update one platform on comments to status messages made in another.
