Yes, these is a quick snapshot, we call it Instant Snapshot Commit. The snapshot is there for a very short time. The performance/unresponsive issue occurs when the VM snapshot is open too long and there are a number of changes that need to be committed when the snapshot is released.

VM snapshots are required for Backup & Replication with NetApp. Our backup from storage snapshot integration will initially work with HP storage (StoreVirtual, StoreServe). The reason we're introducing backup from storage snapshots is for the reason you specify, VM snapshot commits can cause latency issues on VMware.

We'll have some additional detail in the coming weeks on setting up different retention policies. The good thing about "backup copy jobs" is that they don't affect your current backup jobs since they're a new job type.

Disappointed you didn't mention that this is a blatant ripoff of Veeam technology and functionality. Instant VM Recovery and Veeam Quick Migration have been on the market (and patent pending) for well over a year...

Thanks for the post! I'm interested if you've also checked out the new seeding options for replicas? With v6 you can seed from a backup, existing VM or existing replica. For replicating locally it may not be a big deal but over a WAN link you should see great improvements.

Thanks for the post! One recommendation would be to change the "Reversed Incremental" to "Incremental" and select the transform option. You'll get better performance on your incremental backups. It's also completely optional to perform "Active Fulls" as both Reversed Incremental and Incremental will build a new "Full Recovery" from the incrementals.
