In my senior year I couldn't wait to come into the real world, prove my worth, get my ideas out there, and move up "the ladder". Today, I realize that this ladder has a broken leg and "the dream" may plateau for a little while before it begins. And though this is kind of frightening I'm one of the lucky one's who has kept his job so far and has very little to worry about (no wife, kids, mortgage, etc at the age of 24).

Part of me sees excitement in this era. If I'm in the right place at the right time and doing the right thing I may come out better after this mess than I was when I went into it. Now it's up to me alone to decide what "doing the right thing" means. Thanks Fred for the post, it's good to know that other people are worrying about the same thing and are trying to figure out ways to help out as much as they can.

Re: Advertising This Blog

"including banner advertising arbitrage, a desperate attempt to shore up declining readership, and taking advantage of declining keyword pricing."

I don't really see anything wrong with any of the above but everyone's got an opinion I guess. I've always wondered something similar but about RSS feeds in general... which is why are they publisher specific when I really want vertical specific. One feed of the best web 2.0, vc, soccer, music, etc. articles at any given time. I understand the inherent subjectivity of reputable "sources" etc. I just wondered if it could ever be done.

BTW - you're site is one of the few on my blogroll.

Re: The Blogroll I Want For AVC

This is specifically the reason i hate all rss readers except Netvibes! In netvibes there's a button that says "show website". It opens the actual site to the page you wanted to read within the window but keeps the feed to the left. Try it out but make sure to press the 'show website' button.

Re: The Blogroll I Want For AVC

Fred, I was wondering what you're thoughts on alltop were?

Re: Twitter Fills The Tank

Your saying that "the best time to raise money is when you don't need it" can apply on so many different scales, right down to the individual. In fact, after years of being forced to read "business" books as part of my studies I now find them pretty trite and obvious. Right now I'm reading 'Outliers' and other than a few good case I could have told you that 'timing is everything' or it's all about ' time and place'.

Anyways... checked out your site and it really is a good read... subscribed to your RSS too. But when something goes from having that inexplicable charm (which creates followers, engagement, and fans) to becoming a 'commodity' like you said, it really is a bad omen for things to come.

The recent TOS fiasco, which wasn't the first backfire FB had, is because facebook doesn't know how to go from being a kid to an adult. I'm annoyed simply because there was nothing wrong in being a kid in the first place. In fact, they had a platform that garnered huge local interest and created 1000s of niches/topics. In my opinion, they got rid of that valuable asset and diluted to become a national platform open to my damn parents and scattered with dumb ads.

I wonder what would happen if there was a reset button on Facebook and they could start all over again but while knowing what they know over the past 5 years. I agree, Obama's policies are strikingly different to what we've seen in the past but I don't see it as a true form of socialism. I do think that it is necessary right now to intervene with the affairs of companies and individuals who have been burned even though they inflicted this upon themselves.

If this were any period in time I would say let the companies go bankrupt, put their employees back on the market, and let their homes foreclose. However, I worry that it would be short-sighted to believe that the troubles of a few companies and individuals won't effect the economy and markets as a whole.

I'm not sure if capitalism is really being threatened because at the end of the day it stems from competition. My gut tells me that Americans will always be competitive with each other and with other nations. What's going on right now doesn't seem to be threatening competition. However, this really isn't my area of expertise and I'm always a skeptic of any area where information isn't fully transparent and available.

Great comment by the way.
