Moni vastaava toimija palauttaa palvelimaksut 1:1 menetetyltä ajalta ja toiset ei korvaa ollenkaan. Toivottavasti tämä selkeytti! Mukavaa kevään jatkoa!

Thanks Josh for the awesome review. I've followed your reviews on the industry for a long time so I'm naturally thrilled to see UpCloud here as well.

Just wanted to quickly address the IP address issue you mentioned in the article. I can confirm the servers definitely being in San Jose, but the issue is related to GeoIP pointing somewhere where it shouldn't. We've needed to acquire IP addresses in the US quite a bit to support the growth and updating the info on these has probably been overlooked on our behalf.

With regards to the speed of spinning up new servers globally, we're in the process of improving things here as well. We're currently testing new deployment processes in Singapore and US and looking to roll this out globally in the coming weeks. So speeds will definitely pick up to something around 30-40 seconds per server deployment.

Hei, tämä johtuu siitä että Amazon tai Microsoft ei tarjoa riittävän hyvää vastinetta rahalle suorituskyvyn saralla. He eivät päässeet top-10:n. Ainoastaan Google Cloud pärjäsi riittävän hyvin.

A slight correction to my quote there. I was trying to communicate the point that in general - technology fails and it's the processes and reaction that count when that happens. Naturally, you can improve your chances of not affecting production environments with failure through decisions you take on the technological front, but you cannot make technology itself completely failure proof. I believe this relates to security in general as well.

I don't quite buy the plane or boat story, because the tax isn't based on the exact location of you at the time of the purchase, but more on the fact that where they belong. EU describes this as: "Country where customer belongs (has their main business or fixed premises, their permanent address or usually lives)."

I work in the infrastructure-as-a-service industry and trust has become one of the key selling points ever since the Snowden revelations. In this sense the country of origin of a company also matters. Being a Finnish/EU company we believe we have an advantage over US companies in this respect due to national legislation and procedures.

Thanks guys for a great discussion. Very helpful information. We're looking to open up a data centre in SEA for UpCloud, which I represent.

We have Singapore and Hong Kong in sight as possibilities and latency to our customers (and onwards to their customers) is a really valid concern for us. In addition to this, we're looking for CDN/Cloudflare -type partners who can help out in this, but as tomosaigon pointed out - it's not as straight forward.

Good post and important topic as well. I'd also consider this as the extreme discomfort zone. It's not really fear as you mentioned, fear is something real and more concrete that threatens your existence as a human being.

Discomfort is a strong asset for me personally - helps me learn a lot about myself and also always teaches me something new.

Discomfort is the new comfort zone!

I'd say that if a startup follows it's cash flow based on accounting tools - you're already one step behind.

I have been pretty focused on cash flow always, be it during my time as a student or an entrepreneur. I kept an Excel -sheet where I recorded all expenses as they happened. This enabled me to stay on top of things 24/7 and if I had to think through an investment, I always knew what its implications on cash flow were.

Cash flows/burn rates are one of my favorite topic and consider it a seriously underrated part of running a startup.

The point I wanted to make in the post is that an organisation with €2M annual operational funding, that also organises events, is able to take on a lot more risk in organising events as well as subsidising tickets if need be (as opposed to us for example, but that might say more about us than others).

We've talked through these many times and I wanted to be clear that I didn't incline you did this in the past, but just raise the possibility of doing so.

To be honest, I had high hopes for this device, but I don't see all the bits adding up in value. It'd be fine if you only had to pay for roaming, but having to pay almost €300 for the device seriously narrows the potential customer base.
