It looks like a basically lame site with a single good feature that should have been released as a widget, not a website. It lacks full profiles for raters, vid and pic upload capabilities and most of all it lacks CONVERSATION which is basically the new baseline for any decent site.

Re: How I Spent A Million Bucks And Ended Up With These Two Chairs.

1. Interesting post. I think I was blessed with never having a need or desire to be a power user or to amass a mess of followers. If everyone I follow on twitter posted as much as the power posters, I would have to reduce the number I follow, as I read every single tweet, every day. For me, it is mostly a listening tool, a great way to learn from other peoples efforts. Although I have a blog, I don't consider myself a blogger. Rather I am a technology consultant who also blogs a bit. I don't use MySpace or Facebook personally, though I advise clients who do. I am a registered member on 154 social networking sites but I only "listen" on a few of them. Most of the others I joined to evaluate their usefulness for my clients and there are some GREAT entries on the list. Great for different people, different purposes. And some are truly crappy overall and still manage to provide some occasional great content or thought streams. I use "follow this thread" email notices to keep up and that works fairly well and is becoming more ubiquitous. I use Skype and other video chat services to keep up with all my inner circle.Skype is an awesome tool. We use it for dozens of different things and are always finding more ways to benefit from it. Over half my innercircle is "mobile" throughout the day and iPhone and sms get a lot of play. Social Media works well for me, and I see it working better as more and more people master the tools. Although I consult on a wide range of technology from designing networks and evaluating software, Social Media is both the most fun, and most rewarding niche I consult on. It is the most dynamic endeavor on the planet. It is awesome, refreshing, enlightening, stimulating and extraordinarily powerful. My interests in ecology and the online shopping business really broadened my horizons this past year and it has been great to see the role social media is playing in shaping the world's future. All this, and it is still in its infancy! I am excited to see what two man garage startup next takes the world by storm! Two of my favorite quotes help sum up how I feel about the past, present and future of social media. The first is "It's the internet, don't take it too seriously." The second is "It's the Internet, don't ever underestimate it." Hope the new job is a great move for you. Please keep on posting good stuff when you get the chance.

Re: Twitter & the Law of Reciprocity

The 5 steps part is good stuff. No defense is adequate and you can't change the past. As for using the same infrastructure/advisors that created the mess to clean it up, that is typical corporate thinking. It is possible that could work, but it is not NECESSARY to cure the problem. You could throw out the whole old system and install a new one with out collapsing anymore. I also think that Fred's view is slanted toward the save the rich and they will create jobs for the poor philosophy. The trickle down effect. That seems to be how the world's economy has worked forever....but I don't think that history precludes considering other options.

Re: Financial McCarthyism

That train of thought will get absolutely no sympathy from the guy who struggles on 30, 40, or even 100k a year. I have a plantronics discovery 665 and a Samsung whose model number is too tiny for me to see. Both are in the $100 price range. (the samsung might have been a bit less expensive). I am really pleased with how well the iphone detects and stays paired. I can walk away from the phone (out of range) with the ear piece in my ear and it is still paired when I get back. Before i got the Iphone I had to hold the discover button down whenever I came back into range, (even then they paired quickly and easily) Unless you have some unusual interference going on, I recommend you try a better quality head set. It is difficult for me to say which I like better, because they are both good, but the Discovery 665 wins out. It is what I would buy if I had to replace one today. (The samsung is more "feature rich" but I don't really care to try to operate the features from the tiny buttons.) (Just found the magnifying glass the samsung is a wep410)

Re: What is Happening to Blogging? - TalkContent - Content Planning, Content Creation, Content Marketing & Content Monetization

There will be room for three blogs in each niche? Whoa! I don't get that. Do you mean in each niche in each language? In each city? Define niche. Is marketing for right wingers a different niche than marketing for the left? Is a Facebook digest a different niche than a Myspace digest?
I think that there is a lot more room than 3. And I think that dominance is likely to be a rapidly changing state as MOST bloggers have a hard time seeing changes in the wind and the Old Guard will fall to the new young turks on a regular basis. Blogging is a very self centered affair for most of the current "Big Dogs" and that wears thin rapidly. People will move on, looking for other thought provokers amidst the parrots. There are a half of a BILLION (+ or -) user profiles in the social media world. I think that makes for a lot of niches AND a lot of room for players in those niches. In any event, I would agree with your conclusion if you had not re-included the mention of 3.

Re: The 12for12k Challenge Video

Hmmm. I am all for anything that is for improving the planet and the lives of the people on it. But I don't "get" this video. You need war machines and weapons to make your point? What Point? The video doesn't say much about what 12for12 is or does and and frankly it doesn't compel me to go find out. I am thinking that the previewers (you did test it on some people before publishing didn't you?) must have all already been "in the choir" and maybe they "get it" because they have some background, but, and I mean no offense, I think you need to go back to the drawing board and get feedback from people who never heard of you (try a professional agency - they might get onboard for free ). I wish you the best but I think you might be hurting your own cause here.

Re: louisgray.com: Scoble Starts His FriendFeed/Twitter Monetization Strategy

All commentators are “sellers”. We are selling our brand, our image, our perspective etc. Do people generally like to be sold? People generally like to buy. And if we help them make a buying choice, are they being sold? I think not. Is disclosure required here? If you consider that Scobleizer is a trusted “brand” it is unlikely that he would risk his brand for a few affiliate dollars. Promoting a product misleadingly is an unforgiveable offense and would quickly ruin the “brand”. Profiting from an honest opinion is fair, and frankly, it is a given, that if we can, we will. If Magic Johnson says I should wear NIKE shoes, I sort of know he is going to profit, somehow. What’s the difference here? As soon as anyone hypes a crappy product, there will soon be a vacancy in the blogosphere that needs filling.

Re: louisgray.com: Scoble Starts His FriendFeed/Twitter Monetization Strategy

Louis,
Probably sooner than you think. :)

Re: louisgray.com: What Social Media Is and What Social Media Is Not

Mike,
I look forward to getting together. Tom's Pizza and your local Doc just need a little direction. A Ning site is probably the best ice breaker and most often there is someone young enough on staff to manage it until the boss sees the power. And twitter and NING are free, so "in the budget". Tom sees PapaJohns is selling online, so he knows about it.
If your Doc is the same age as his clients, it probably does not make sense to get into social media, but if he is young enough to have clients joining his practice for ten or twenty years, he better get on it! :)
I believe all Social Media efforts can be tracked to increased sales. You have x # of $ annual sales with x % of sales growth. You add social Media and both # of $ annual sales and sales growth increase. I have done some experiments with the computer school I consult for and find it is fascinating how some businesses can expect to move annual growth from 10% a year to 100% a year, with social media marketing. I did a workup for a fictional cell phone accessories store that projects 1000% percent annual growth.
My latest client is a company I co-founded and it is going to be a flagship case scenario of viral propagation and WOM multiplication.

Victor

Re: louisgray.com: What Social Media Is and What Social Media Is Not

I want to make it clear that I LIKE MIKE (Fruchter) I follow his twitter and his blog (as I do LG) Mike lives near me and I hope to meet him in person one day.
I agree with all of his 6 points of what social media is. I take exception to a (2), (5) and (6) (to some extent)of what it isn’t.
(2) Social Media isn’t the end all solution for every business. Tom’s Pizza, your local doctor, the garage that fixes your car, can all eliminate advertising with effective use of social media. Localized social media is the “great uncharted territory” for now, but inroads are being made. Tom’s Pizza should have a Ning site and use a computer generated coupon to enroll every customer. Coupon rewards for greatest pizza party video and greatest pizza pic could easily generate some friendly competitiveness and create opportunities for his customers to get to know one another – after all, they live near each other. Tom could Twitter to his 100 or 200 customers, weekly specials or special events. Tom could do MySpace and get plugged in to the hundreds on MySpace users near him. Who knows, Tom might even be witty and find an appreciative audience who never realized his humor in the quick in and out at the store.
I can think of no entity that cannot measurably benefit from engaging in Social Media. There is a venue for every purpose. Selling multi-million dollar mansions? www.asmallworld.net or Affluence.org. Social Media IS the end all for ALL businesses; they just need someone to direct them.
Social Media IS a replacement for SEO. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but what use will search engines serve if everything we want or need is already connected to us in our social networks? Google knows this and they are heavily investing in alternative revenue streams including several social media properties. (not that adwords ever really benefited anyone, much, other than google)
Social Media IS about ROI. Nothing can produce greater ROI than effective use of Social Media.
Finally, I’d like to say I’m surprised that Mike called Perry’s Video ‘fantastic”. While his 7 points are valid, they are hardly secrets, and the video itself is less than compelling. I was ready to click off at 1:39 but kept on looking for “fantastic”. I want to also point out that everyone does want to buy. We all want to, and we all do buy, very regularly. What better place to get purchasing advice than from our trusted friends in our social networking spaces. Perry is right, one should not “sell” in social media. If you follow the rules of social media outlined by Mike and Perry, you will have plenty of buyers, without ever trying to sell.
Thanks guys, for keeping the convo going

Re: louisgray.com: Disqus2FF Mashes Up Fractured Conversations

So, how do I get the API key for my blogspot?

Re: The Curse of the Shiny Object

hear hear!

Re: I Get Paid To Know What I’m Not… What Do You Get Paid For?

Ken, although I came to technology rather late in life, I embraced it wholeheartedly and developed a "rapport" with technology quickly. And I became "the bridge" between the pre-internet business and the transition to internet. I can feel where you are coming from. As for the question of knowing a lot about a little or a little about a lot, it depends on the goal. For most career phases, a lot about a little makes more money. (I have often hired contractors who were paid much more than me) Only at the very top level does it turn around and frankly when that happens it generally means that person knows A LOT about A LOT. (or the invention of TV) Has it been abused? Yes. Has it helped society? Yes. Has it hurt society (particularly people who were not well equipped to deal with credit)? Yes.
It is just another thread in our fabric.
So, no, I don't see it as a sophomoric period before moving the human race to a greater maturity anymore so than electricity or automation.
Orwellian fears are realized from the invention of the electronic database, not the internet. RFID tags will enable phenomenal drilling down into ever aspect of our lives. But the good that comes from that will offset the evil.
As Web 2.0 revs up with a roar we have much to look forward to. In a few short years every scientist in the world will be able to collaborate across the planet, simultaneously, in real time to address disease, climate change, energy, and every major ill that endangers our future. Solution that now take decades may soon take mere months. It is really quite awesome and immensely satisfying to be a part of.
