Are you referring to?
sp = Spacing(test_file) - passes in a test file to the Spacing object
Spacing.spacing_check(sp)- calls a spacing check method on that file
print("Spaces replaced") -prints results

Language situation is now that we are still both speaking English to each other but Russian to toddler - but we'll need to switch soon because I can tell she's getting frustrated when we speak English and she doesn't understand. It is still really hard for us to speak Russian to each other - feels like an ill-fitting glove, but we try as much as possible. Toddler speaks fluent Russian.

This is a great post, Y. I agree with most everything you wrote...esp. try to go to lighting talks if you can. I recently gave a 5-minute talk at DataPhilly and it was much less intimidating than giving a 40-hour talk at a huge conference. The other advice I have for anyone reading is to go to groups as a passive audience member for the first couple times, get a feel for them. Everyone in Philly Tech is really friendly and it's a small community, so the more events you go to, the more you'll understand how to talk to the audience, and if you know people it will be less scary.

The last thing for me personally, it has been really hard to admit that I am an expert at something, especially when people all around me are developer whizzes hardcore coding in the JVM or committing to open-source projects, but I agree 100% that no matter where you work, you are an expert on something, and your talk doesn't have to be super-technical, it can be more general. And, in fact, I've found that bridging the gap between really technical topics and really generalized ones is an area that tech people need to be exposed to more, so if you come from fields outside of tech, the more the merrier.

And if anyone reading needs any intros to any local tech data-related groups, feel free to shoot me an email. I know going alone is sometimes super-intimidating.

Two things:

1) Re: Writing. The only way to become influential is to keep writing more and more and discarding the crap and pitching publications you care about. I know it sounds cold and callous, but it will not happen any other way. I've learned this the hard way. I didn't write my book until I actually wrote it. And while it's self-published it gave me enough confidence to say, I finished something and put it out there, and now I'm working on my novel and pitches to publications. None of it might amount to anything, but we don't know really famous authors until they blow up. They've usually been toiling away in obscurity for decades and not the right people have recognized them.

That's so cool. I've found a similar thing happening to me with Philly. I think it takes a while to adjust to situations for people. For some people it's harder than others, but when you do adjust, it turns out awesome.

Thanks for sharing. What I think is interesting about this video, other than the fact that WTF, is that it's probably the first music video shot in an actual suburban American home instead of on a yacht, in Da Club, etc. It actually is kind of refreshing to see all the stuff you're used to.

I print it out. Then I read it out loud or murmuring under my breath if I'm in a public space and people think I'm insane, and I cross that ish out. Then I make the edits in the actual Word document. This is why it takes forever.
