I am a father with three young children and I am almost 50. I take the children everywhere in London and never take buses. I use a tricycle.
2. If elderly people regularly cycled, they would be much healthier and would not need to rely on buses
3. The infirm can use electric wheel chairs and other clever mobility tools.
4. Copenhagen manages to have 35% of people on bikes; and the Danes are top of the 'happiness league'
5. I agree that many cyclists need to be much more considerate towards pedestrians.

Re: A snip

1. London is quite unique in charging less for buses than the Tube. It doesn't have to be this way.
2. You are going to be wealthier because at the moment, by using the bus one day a week, you are subsidising all the people who use it everyday.
3. People who cannot walk long distances should live near tube stations.
4. Once we learn to live with no buses, we will probably learn to live with no taxis, just electric rickshaws.

Re: A snip

Never under-estimate the adaptability of man. Stop the buses and people will adjust. I can guarantee that overall people will be healthier and wealthier.

Re: Dashing Tweeds leg-warmers

They are woollen. Whether a sturdy Dutch-style rack and a comfy cushion is an acceptable adaptation is a moot point.

Re: demimismo - Woman cyclist crushed to death by lorry as she...

David,
I agree that we all have to take responsibility for our actions. Say you need to catch the 16:00 to Manchester from Euston; there is a docking station around the corner from your office and you don't particularly want to leave your bicycle in that makeshift arrangement Network Rail calls bicycle parking. The Vel-On would be ideal, except though you are going to miss the train because there is nowhere to return the bicycle near the station.

Re: Moof Bikes with solar powered lights!

The transparent solar panels are on the lenses of the lights.

Re: Bailout - mania

Exactly, Cezar. Riding a bike is not an effort most of the times (and I doubt he would be riding if it were). It is true that just as he doesn't care what people think of his dress sense, the opinion of others does not affect his choice of transport, and he needs to be commended for that.

Re: Wimpy man

My point is that Boris is dressing down to ride his bike. If he were walking he wouldn't be wearing the silly hat, the silly gloves, the student rucksack and the jacket with two missing buttons.
Naturally I consider a fluorescent jacket equally bad taste.
