The story and the setting do sound really compelling and cool. And with a good enough script, it can almost not even matter who's directing it as long as they don't actively mess it up. So lets hope the script is decent and doesn't get monkeyed around with too much.

Re: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jeff Bridges Eyed For ‘Jane Got a Gun;’ Lynne Ramsay Remains Silent

The first thing that came to mind when I heard that O'Connor was basically transplanting Ramsey was Spielberg replacing Kubrick for AI. Both those guys are absolute geniuses and probably some of the top filmmakers of their respective generations. And that movie still sucked because it was a horrible confusing concoction of both their movies combined. So, I wonder, what chance does a Lynne Ramsey and Bro O'Connor mixture have of making a good movie? Adding to that the producer in charge of everything is probably a dope. If I were any of those actors I wouldn't touch this movie with a 39 1/2 foot pole.

Re: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Jeff Bridges Eyed For ‘Jane Got a Gun;’ Lynne Ramsay Remains Silent

All signs do seem to point to the producer trying as hard as they can to make Ramsey look bad. Directors don't just not show up to their own movie for no reason.

This story is fascinating.

Re: ‘Epic’ Trailer #3: Famous Voices Congregate in a CG Forest

Some other titles that do not fit this movie:

"Thrilling"
"Mature"
"Interesting"
"Well-Crafted"

Re: Following Lynne Ramsay’s Departure, Jude Law Exits ‘Jane Got a Gun’

Who is Brian Duffield?

Re: ‘Warrior’ Director Gavin O’Connor Steps in to Direct ‘Jane Got a Gun’

It is so odd to me that they're continuing production instead of delaying the project for long enough to get the new director to actually understand what the movie he is make is about. I don't think that can be done in two days. With everything that must go into getting ready for a production that quickly I can't even imagine having the time to even read the script.

One thing is clear, whatever movie O'Connor is making is not his vision. It is Ramsey's. Every decision that was made in the months of preproduction were all hers and O'Connor will either have to struggle to execute her vision and merely be a figurehead, or try to unreadily impulsively inject his own vision. Both horrible choices (but of which I would lean towards the former), so all the more reason to DELAY the production until it is ready.

Re: ‘Jane Got a Gun’ Loses Director on Day One of Shooting; Lynne Ramsay Quits By Not Showing Up

Russ, this isn't the first time you have called We Need to Talk About Kevin a "masterpiece". That movie was an abortion.

Ratcatcher still remains one of my favorite movies of all time, but I can't see how you or anyone was even able to sit through all of We Need to Talk About Kevin and say you liked it by the end. I could see every seam in the filmmaking, it was like a film school movie. And there wasn't anything to be said or learned in the whole thing. It was miserable. In all the worst ways. I felt like I was watching a snuff film. Awful, awful movie.

Movern Caller wasn't that great either. I hate to say it but it really looks like Ramsey may be a one hit wonder. Such a shame too.

Re: /Filmcast Ep. 216 – J.J. Abrams Directing Star Wars, and The Best Films of Sundance 2013

Why Abrams is the worst possible choice for the new trilogy:

--

From Wikipedia, on Kershner directing The Empire Strikes Back:

Kershner is best known as the director of The Empire Strikes Back[5] (1980), the immediate sequel of Star Wars. Kershner was a surprising choice for such a movie; according to him, when he asked producer George Lucas:

"Of all the younger guys around, all the hot-shots, why me?"

Lucas replied, "Well, because you know everything a Hollywood director is supposed to know, but you're not Hollywood."

--

JJ Abrams has only directed supremely forgettable movies that are little more than a paean to their inspirations. He is a cover band. He has nothing but cheap lens flares and and fanboy enthusiasm to add to the franchise.

I would rather someone who doesn't care at all about Star Wars to read a script and love the characters and story enough to know they can add more than clever nods and easter eggs to the franchise. But treat it like an actual piece of art.

If I can give any credit to Episodes I-III, it's that it every reference to the original trilogy was integral to the story. It dealt with the audiences knowledge of it in a really mature way. For example, the transformation of an innocent Annikin into who we know will one day be the evil Darth Vader in contrast to Luke's transformation into the good son that must destroy him, plays out like a Greek drama in its themes of inescapable destiny and good vs. evil. Whereas the latest Star Trek played out more like a fan fiction with pointless cameos and silly one liners.

Say what you will about Jar Jar, but at least he was original. Do not expect to see anything in the JJ Abrams Star Wars that won't be meticulously sculpted for the singular purpose of not pissing fans off. Is that what you want? Or do you want a talented director who doesn't give a shit if Han shot first to put all his creative energy into crafting an interesting and emotional story that continues the Star Wars story.

JJ Abrams is the worst possible choice because he is exactly the person we would expect to direct the new trilogy.

PS. It seems to me one of Lucas' greatest talents since the success of A New Hope has been to piss off his fans. To take something that they expect from him and try to do something different with it. That is not the work of a bad artist. That is the work of a good artist. I think once we look past some of the superficial elements of Episodes I-III, it'll be easier to see it is not devoid of brilliance. Until then, I look forward to history smiling upon it and forgetting Episodes VII-IX like the rest of JJ Abrams' oeuvre.

Re: A Cast of Kings S2E04 – Garden of Bones | /Film

Doucheface.

Re: ‘Tyrannosaur’ Trailer: See Peter Mullan’s Searing Command Performance | /Film

rawwwwwwwwwrrrrrrr!!!

Re: Watch THR’s Hour Long Roundtable Interview With The Screenwriters of Summer 2011

i consider none of these people writers.

Re: 31st Annual Razzie Award Winners

Having an opinion of Shyamalan is like having an asshole.

Everyone has one.
