So Ms. Gilbert is the only democrat running in the 8th District. She dropped out of the race after the primary ballots had been printed so she is on the primary ballot. (Easy enough so far.) Because she is the only democrat running in the race, she will win. Michigan law only allows a candidate to "vacate the ballot" for a few specific reasons, one of which is not being healthy enough to run, which is what Gilbert claims.
Gilbert will win tomorrow, but the state has not yet agreed to remove her name from the "figurative" November ballot. It hasn't been printed yet and Jake could have written that more clearly. Republicans are claiming that Ms. Gilbert is healthy enough to run, and are pointing to a handful of tweets Gilbert has published talking about doing physical activity. So she may yet appear on the as of yet unprinted November ballot.

Hi Gene - I'm a little confused. WKAR is the public radio station in Lansing, owned by MSU. We are WUOM/WVGR/WFUM owned by the UM. Either way, local stations don't have anything to do with the NPR website or how they moderate it, only our own websites. They explain how they moderate and have so links for people you can communicate with here:

Correct, it's not my job to report about Europe, which is why we didn't produce anything for our airwaves about it on Michigan Radio. But that doesn't mean I am so close minded that I don't pay attention personally to events outside of Michigan. I offered the article simply because I thought you might find it interesting, as the story has advanced a bit. I'm not trying to fight with you...but rather contribute to the conversation. I thought that's what you wanted. I'll leave you to fight with others who enjoy that more. Thank you for commenting on our stories.

We do remove hate speech, but not always racist speech (which is much more subjective). While many will disagree with what Peter Rogan says above, I doubt anyone would feel hurt by it. We also remove threats, which your post comes very close to....just sayin'.

Not my job to report on things that happen in France. If such an incident happens in Michigan, we would certainly report on it. I don't see any coverage from it on NPR, but I do recall hearing a story on our station from the BBC. Also, the narrative has been called into doubt:

Legal staff? We're a non profit radio station. We have an old law book and Google for that...and the SPJ legal help line. But our understanding of the federal protections you speak of is that someone needs to file a complaint with the FBI for them to open a Color of Law investigation. The Eddie Joe Lloyd part is interesting, because the Sanford interview happened shortly after that agreement and it's not clear that all DPD was following that yet. We have reported (we've been on this story for a long time) that Sanford's interview was not recorded and that it should have been.

Earlier this month, Snyder vetoed a bill that would have relieved about 45 larger communities in the state from paying portions of the cost of highway construction projects in their towns. Last month Snyder vetoed legislation that would have limited customer access to cheaper aftermarket parts for vehicle repairs by directing mechanics to use “original equipment manufacturer” parts on newer cars.

We don't own the rights to any pictures of her. The intellectual property rights penalties can get very expensive for us if we use pictures that are not ours or public domain.

I suspect it is the context of the shooting. In Minnesota you have a black man legally carrying a concealed gun, who is shot by a white police officer, allegedly for no good reason. That story has government abuse of power, racism, gun rights issues, and perhaps most importantly for CNN and MSNBC, video. The shooting in Michigan is very different. By all accounts, this was an inmate trying to escape, and taking advantage of being incorrectly handcuffed in the front. While an inmate grabbing an officer's gun and shooting is also a tragedy, it doesn't have the public policy implications or elements that create more fear in society that the Minnesota shooting does. It will obviously be covered more by Michigan Radio nevertheless, because it happened in Michigan. Would the Michigan shooting get more attention if the inmate had been black? Probably initially, but I don't think it would have been sustained wants the facts came out and it was clear that it wasn't a protest or racial event, but an inmate trying to escape.

Many of our other stories about this incident have the information you're looking for, but yes, Gordon was handcuffed, but with his hands in front, not behind his back. He was white...the two deceased bailiffs were white....the injured deputy is black.
