I do think the community management conversations are a bit too insular. While a day is awesome, I do not see a copywriter appreciation day and there is need to address plain language needs. I have no issue with the vendors pitching - that is their job and I represented one for a long time. I think we are past the celebration days and need to advance into constant, enterprise-wide strategic thinking and planning. How do we scale and connect to attribution? Basically, we need to get beyond the BLANK is dead posts and stop devaluing our industry by not taking every opportunity to start taking some business risks and connections.

Re: But What About Quality?

Spot on. Not engagement for sake of engagement. Engagement seems to be code for creating a bunch of stuff and throwing it out there and seeing what sticks. It is NOT. I agree with all of the qualifying questions you list in post. Underpinning all those questions is - Is this what your community really wants? Are you listening (on/offline) and aggregating and interpreting behaviors into insights that tell you this is the direction/tactic where your org should invest? We need to address behavior, not technology or tactics. We need to think perspective and governing mission and philosophy rather than focusing on the granular.

Re:

Museums can learn a lot from corporate and vice versa. When there is room for dialogue and focused experience, social media can be incredibly beneficial and help overcome natural barriers of the museum.

Re: Blame the Crowd, Not the Camera: Challenges to a New Open Photo Policy at the National Gallery

Of course! What if there were certain areas marked with a 'X' on the floor indicating best picture spots? Or there were identified times to take pictures or conduct a sketch or an active discussion. Those designated times could then be supplemented with free, open place behavior and discussion and people would know they would have to fight the view of an iPad. The institution - ANY org promoting social behavior on/offline - need to bear some burden of educating the public about how and when to use various tools/platforms for the ideal experience. The org can work with the community to determine level of education and support, but this framework is needed or we will have chaos and everyone loses. Framweworks are not bad...it is when we get lost in and inflexible with the framework that we have issues.

Re: You Can Build a Community, But You Will Never Control It

A community is a two-way dialogue and experience. There needs to be expectation setting. You should not change a communities expectations or boundaries without first requesting community feedback or offering explanation. There is an invisible social contract in place and it is the responsibility of the community manager to interpret the pact and educate about the guardrails without disrupting the entire ecosystem. Control is not possible. Influence is possible, but only with established trust and communication. Any community must be prepared to evolve and understand that this trajectory is not decided by them, but community members. Must be able to adapt.

Re: Episode 04 – Back to the Future

So far, this is my favorite episode! Thank you for continuing to raise the bar each month. Everything mentioned in this episode is exactly why I am changing industries, went back to school, and decided to pursue my passion working with museums. I do not have any grand visions of becoming a curator or a director. Rather, I want to apply my community management, strategy and digital measurement experience to museums. I definitely have a lot to learn from the museum industry and I think they have a lot to learn from how other businesses are struggling with the same issues and growing trends. Not only did this episode validate my career decision, but my thesis!

Re: BOTNS #237: Reading Aloud to Children

We set a high bar with our oldest child. When she was born and struggled to sleep, I read her Homer's Odyssey and Illiad. For the first two years of my daughter's life she was strongly influenced by the Trojan War. I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing. The child does have a flair for the dramatic. Over the years and with the addition of our second daughter we have read Great Expectations and A Wizard of Earthsea. Last year, we struggled to get our daughter to read and enjoy books, but when she turned nine, it was like a switch flipped on and now she doesn't put down a book (although she is more drawn to graphic novels). The latest family read all of us enjoyed and simultaneously became better educated was A History of the World in 100 Objects. We read about one or two objects each evening.

Re: Dark Side of Community Management

Thank you for being one of the few to address this topic head-on. You are right. We cannot always be the hero or the savior...or even the martyr of our cause. I am constantly battling my Ego and these archetypes on a daily basis. We need to talk about these issues, not just amongst our community manager peers, but with our broader teams and executives. It is important they understand the anatomy of the community and what / who makes the heart of the community tick.

Re: The Devolving Civility Situation

I think we need to cut people some slack and realize our world is far bigger than our social media bubble.

Re: A Sad Farewell to The BlogWorld/New Media Expo Community

And we wish you the best of luck.
