She didn't say she liked his commie sympathies, what she admired was his willingness to help the disenfranchised and his conservationist bent. There are many conservatives with a green slant http://www.rep.org/quotes.html and even the great civil rights leader MLK was a life-long Republican. The party of the big tent has always been at it's best when the more progressive leaders (Ike, Teddy R, etc.) were at the foreground. It's like the world has become one big example of the TS Elliot quote "Conservatism is too often the conservation of the wrong things: liberalism a relaxation of discipline; revolution a denial of the permanent things." -

While I am against the Canadian fishing industry battering seals for sport and profit you are being VERY ignorant (and racist) of the Inuit culture and one their main supplies of food - raw seal. They live in the thundra and cannot grow veggies there and must live off what can survive in that area. By eating what the Inuit eat she is showing solidarity with the local native custom. As a planet we need to move to a more sustainable organic diet but that doesn't mean we have the right to trample on a culture which has found something sustainable for it's people just because personal preferance makes it distasteful.
