I mentioned in the introduction to the recipe that I have a very strong dislike of bittermelon. I'll update the recipe though to more clearly note that it's usually a staple ingredient in the dish. Sue) unique to the experience of being objectified as "foreigners." My preliminary findings show that it turns out that different racial groups experience differential effects of exposure to this kind of discrimination. The associations between foreigner objectification and outcomes such as anxiety are STRONGER for Asians, historically subjected to the "perpetual foreigner syndrome," vs. other people of color. This flies in the face of Asians' portrayed as the Model Minority, the racial group who does not face racism, or at least "lesser" forms of it.

Re: Racism by Any Other Name Smells Just as Rotten

Thanks, Brian. It was difficult, and I anticipate that it will ruffle some feathers. But that's part of the risk of putting yourself out there and saying something that matters. I appreciate the support!

Re: Racism by Any Other Name Smells Just as Rotten

@Passionflower, thank you for articulating this so well.

@Elaine, I wish that it were a matter of picking our battles. But, as Passionflower points out, the less blatant acts of prejudice or racism are the ones that are the most insidious, especially when it is enacted by people who are well-intentioned. There is a whole body of literature on these forms of "modern racism" and "aversive racism" (see Sam Gaertner & Jack Dovidio's work) in which people say that they have egalitarian attitudes but suggest otherwise through contradictory/ambivalent behaviors (often out of conscious awareness). Furthermore, research on attributional ambiguity (see the work of Crocker) shows that in situations where an act perceived as somehow prejudicial cannot easily be attributed to a cause, it is more associated with negative mood and could have other potential negative consequences. When you're constantly asking yourself if you imagined something and don't know how to explain it, it is much more stressful. In a case of blatant racism, you can say, "Well, they're just stupid bigots," thus protecting your self-esteem and well-being.

Re: Racism by Any Other Name Smells Just as Rotten

Kudos to listening to your gut and speaking up! I've made a note at the bottom of the post to address that.

Re: Racism by Any Other Name Smells Just as Rotten

You bring up an interesting point about the supposed play to nostalgia in the concept. I really don't get how the concept pushes boundaries at all. As you point out, it feels like two steps back.

I'm really struck by the point you bring up about feeling like promoting the restaurant was your "job." I was a bit shocked at the amount of social media and traditional media coverage there was of the press event, all of which had a very positive and PR'y tone. Even I will admit that when I got the invite (my first invite to an event as a food blogger), I somehow felt indebted to them for making me feel like I was someone special. Perhaps that contributed to my hesitation in writing a critical piece with such serious themes.

My experience of thinking and writing about this calls into question what our role is as food bloggers and members of the social media within a relatively small urban community. I know that it is important to support each other, particularly independent businesses. At the same time, don't we also have an obligation to provide diverse perspectives, which includes shedding light on the not-so-pretty? If everyone is just a hypemachine for each other, it is ultimately a disservice to the community and the quality of our food culture.

In my first year of blogging here, I have struggled with finding ways to have my voice heard but still gain acceptance into the community. You could say that it's an iteration of the kindergarten experience all over again. I think that's why it is so encouraging to receive comments like yours in support for this writing.

Thanks, Kate.

Re: Racism by Any Other Name Smells Just as Rotten

Yeah.
