The show has offered a few theories as to how, appealing to the pseudo-science, but the philosophical tone of the beginning of the series has long ago been compromised--and not because Mohinder stopped his bookend rants.

Re: Heroes Preview: 4.16 Pass/Fail

I'm not here to rag on anyone's opinions on anything--I'm not that kind of person. I believe my opinion has just as much right to exist (and be opposed) as anyone elses.
And no, I don't think "Sylaire's Crap", believe me, Sylar himself hijacking the show is a MUCH bigger problem, but again, I reserve the right to take refuge in that idea simply being my opinion.
But as for the whole "Sylar and Claire thing"...If the whole thing serves the story and has an appropriate payoff then I'm all for it. It's just that at this point in time, I can't see how that agenda is going to work out. In short, I'm in a place where I can prepare to be amazed, or brace myself for...something. As of now, the whole plotthread appears to be rather contrived, not unlike something out of a bad fanfic or something. Maybe if there were more subtle hints laid throughout the season, then I'd buy it as something a bit more legit...
But you know...I'm not sure if I just took my neck off the noose or if I just made the knot tighter...
Maybe it would help if I quit while I'm ahead...

Re: Heroes Preview: 4.16 Pass/Fail

I'm getting tired of Sylar's rather shallow obsession over Claire. He's got her ability, effectively making him immortal. what more does he want from her? Hopefully this will all blow over just as quickly and easily as the whole lesbian thing we were all freaking out about when the season first began.

As for Hiro's story next week...I'm actually pretty excited! It'll be great to see Kensei/Adam again, and if the images are to be trusted, there will be a rematch! With katanas! Awesome.
However, the whole scenario won me over when upon having a fridge brilliance! moment--in my kitchen no less (yes, I'm a tvropes fan) --upon realizing that the scenario suggests a pretty neat Chrono Trigger reference (you know, time traveller put on trial...Did I also mention I'm a bit of a gamer/nerd too?)

Re: New Heroes Season 4 Second Half Promos

Season 5 idea: I know it's kind of early to be jumping the gun, but I'm so glad the show is getting back on track and I've got this great idea I'm just dying to get off my chest--and I'm curious to see what you guys think of it.

Claire gets kidnapped by a faceless villain; she gets stabbed in the "sweet spot" that stops her from healing and the body is disposed of.

She's eventually found by somebody--preferably a character not seen in a long time (I would personally choose West. I hear he's doing awesome as a GN character, almost enough to redeem his season 2 performance...and I think he deserves another chance here, but I digress!).
After removing the object from her brain, Claire regenerates before his eyes. He reveals to her that she's been missing for five years! *Cue title card*

So yes, I'm proposing a timeskip...a plot relevant timeskip that gives the writers a chance to reinvent, add, or remove characters as necessary without the need to outright explain the changes--in fact, use the mystery as an opportunity to explain the changes through plot. For example:

HRG: With Claire missing for 5 years, his "morally grey" has a bit more of the sepia tint of a few too many beer bottles. He runs his own iteration of the Company, putting all of his time and effort into running the desk side of things. Lauren is still by his side, but she's more interested in playing the field--both as an agent, and has a possible interest in someone else as she's begun to lose interest with the callous, somewhat bitter man Noah has become over the years. One of his promising young agents creates a conflict within him as a conflict of personal and professional interests as theonly person whose mattered to him for a long time besides Claire is slowly slipping away from him.
Needless to say, upon hearing that Claire is alive, his issues don't go away over night....

Two Agents: They work for Noah's Company, fairly new recruits. They make a good team in an odd couple sort of way. I would say they should be two guys, but the show is already legendary for its bromances--canon and imagined. So they should probably be opposite gender--with prerequisite chemistry of course. They're role would be to give the viewers insight into the way Noah runs things. Both would be pretty snarky.

Peter: Peter has his full ability back (happened sometime within the five year gap). Has a wife whose pregnant (who also has an ability) . She's kinda like the Mary Jane to his Spiderman, really supportive of his superheroing antics, which as a character flaw of sorts, he still needs in order to reaffirm himself, blah, blah, blah. But he does hate the fact that he is slowly gaining broader recognition as a hero.

Matt: Has gone insane. Personally, I ALWAYS believed Matt would be a great evil character. With all that he's been through, I'm sure he's learned he can never have a normal family life, perhaps not even a family life at all. He's learned some things about himself since Sylar took over his body. Not all the lessons have been good. Okay, I haven't developed his story much, but Matt needs to join the dark side!

Claire: after being out of the loop for 5 years, she's struggling to get back in. Reconnecting with her family is a big deal to her, learning to accept how some of the ways her parents and loved ones have changed--really, as much as I've loved and hated Claire throughout the years, this would be a great plot device to make her the audience surrogate for most of the changes all these characters will have undergone in this five year jump. Of course, she also has the plot of finding her would-be murderer and possibly extracting revenge.

Angela: She's been awfully quiet this season...If I were in charge of things, she would be trying to get involved with her grandchildren a bit more. Monty and Simon may not be that plot relevant, but they do have Petrelli DNA and the potential to hold an ability, and I don't think Angela is careless enough to totally dismiss that...So basically, she's got some plan involving them. Nathan is dead, and Peter is either too dear or too distanced. She needs a new pawn. Or two. For Great Mischief!

Hiro: If he isn't officially dead (or otherwise disposed of at the end of the current season), Hiro is otherwise MIA. As much as I love Hiro, I think he could use a little time on the bench. I don't think he should be killed, but I don't think bench time would hurt. Look what it did for Micah/Rebel?
As for Ando, if he isn't happily married to Kimiko (and likely written off as a result), he could be on a "quest" to look for Hiro, which draws him into the story. He may actually be the first to realize that something's not right with Parkman...

Sylar: Still the same. Why mess with a winning formula? If anything, his madness is now more directed. He specifically wants a confrontation with Peter, whom he deems as the only one who could stop him.

I could go on with this, but I get the feeling that I'm doing the comment equivalent of talkng to myself. I think it would be best to see how well the idea is received so far before continuing to waste finger dexterity on explaining any more of it. Besides, it's all wishful thinking/speculation anyway. It all basically amounts to a glorified fanfic that I'm just too lazy to write anyway.

So yeah...

Re: Open Thread: First Half of Heroes Season 4

I'd like to see Noah play a big part in some incarnation of the future. He's mysteriously absent from most future scenarios (I dare not say all, because just when you're that certain...).
I'd eventually like to see him start his own Company with him playing more of a boss type role, kinda mentoring a new generation of agents shaped under the new policy he's taken up over the years--basically what I was (overly) expecting to happen this season with last season's finale making mention of starting a new company.
Whether Noah's version of the company ends up being a force for good, or bad, I think it would give him an interesting story. As it stands, I'm pretty glad his story for this season is starting to pick up. I was getting a little tired of watching him waste away.
I love the slower paced character development thing this season's got going on, but at the same time, I would like to see a bit more of the action-packedness of Volume 3 (but with a MUCH more organized storyline!! Pinehearst vs Primetech had loads of potential, but it was squandered in so many ways!!).
I really loved seeing Hiro get pissed at Samuel. Almost makes me regret all the mean things I said about him in is rather ill-conceived trip to India last season (which had how much relevance to ANYTHING?). I'm still not sure on what I feel about him dying: him cheating death would be a bit too cheesy, but him biting the bullet would be too hard to accept, what with Nathan gone for good too. I wouldn't be surprised if some clever time travelling will end up saving the day somehow. I wouldn't be entirely disappointed either. I mean, after all, it IS his power...

Emma...Emma, Emma, Emma. Her storyline better be the Chekov's Gun of the season. Either that, or "Cello Slice" better kill somebody. It's getting to be time to make Emma important, whether it's in getting Peter back into shape, or....doing something useful with her ability.

Overall, I agree with Nathan's final words in paraphrasing, "the best is yet to come."

Re: Open Thread: First Half of Heroes Season 4

That would have physically saved him, but after viewing the whole scene again, I guess the idea of Nathan hanging at the edge of a building was more or less a metaphor for his internal struggle against Sylar--as the scene's end result proves, the fall itself was survivable (at least for a Heroes character anyway), but Nathan clearly couldn't go on fighting Sylar inside of him--after all, Sylar does have the home court advantage in this case, what with it being HIS body to begin with and all.

Re: Open Thread: First Half of Heroes Season 4

Again, that plays into my point. I'm sure most casual viewers (the ones most likely to complain about the show) don't keep up with the graphic novels, so a lot of blanks seem to be left unfilled--and who could blame such viewers for thinking that? I mean, most people don't have time to keep up with television shows when their aired anymore, hence NBC.com, tivo, dvr, etc, etc, so expecting them to keep up with a show AND follow it in graphic novel format to keep up with little details that seem all but ignored on the main show is a bit too much to ask of the common viewer--as in the viewership that does not include the uber-loyal to those who simply follow the show just because they've already invested themselves in it. In short, I'm referring to the problem the show has tried to address every season; keeping the plots new and interesting without alienating potential new viewers. I feel that sometimes the details lost in translation between the novels and the show itself make that very problem worse, not better.

Re: Open Thread: First Half of Heroes Season 4

I just happened to remember that!: Her name was Dale. And you bring up a good point. Coincidentally, almost all of Sylar's Season 1 powerset was picked up from very average looking people, up to and including his trademark telekinesis. In short, I agree with what you're saying. Throw in some average looking people as main characters!!

Re: Open Thread: First Half of Heroes Season 4

And THAT is part of the problem. The casual viewership would not POSSIBLY know that. I mean, I consider myself a fan of the show, but I've been known to miss out on the graphic novels quite a bit. I think the novels are great for introducing characters that have little to no impact on the series proper and could possibly appear in the show (fan faves like Sparrow come to mind)--it's a good testing ground for potentially likeable characters--but as a means to continue story archs for established characters...that's just LAME. Imho of course.

Re: Heroes 4.12 The Fifth Stage Discussion Thread

I think that all depends on Sylar's next move now that he's back body and soul. Seeing that one way or the other, everybody's making their way to the carnival, it's only a matter of time before he stops by.
It would be almost too awesome if the Carnival turns into the battleground for the Peter/Sylar battle that seems to be brewing. I mean, basically the battle would come down to arms race between the two, seeing who can acquire the handiest abilities the fastest--and of course Samuel and his peeps won't be simply standing around.
I'm not holding my breath for a battle royale; it'll be either way too short, or mostly off-screen if past fights are any indication -_-" BUT it is nice to dream :D

Re: Heroes 4.12 The Fifth Stage Discussion Thread

I TOTALLY agree! Matt needs to go to the dark side. He should quit messing around and just do it. If nothing else, it would be a testament to the impact Sylar made in their rather bizarre body sharing adventure. Now that Sylar is out of him, it would be a pretty good time to emphasize Matt's personal demons and frustrations--I mean how many times can this guy lose his family and loved ones without it getting to him. I mean look at him! He's a guy who can get inside of anybody's head, yet he's so ultimately alone when it comes down to it. ANY writer worth two vowels can milk some pathos out of that and make some good antihero fuel at least (did I just mix metaphors there?? Well, you get what I'm saying regardless).
In a way, I think seeing a major character turn legitimately evil would actually have a bigger impact than simply killing someone off just to make way for new blood or the wasted hope of improving ratings.
If a long-standing character makes an honest move in character development that just happens to alter their alignment, THAT is what will get the show the positive attention it's been craving for so long.
So yes, Matt should turn evil, but most importantly, by his own volition--not being misled by a charismatic villain (as Adam did to Peter), manipulated against their will--(Samuel to Hiro), or having good intentions gone horribly wrong--(Arthur to Nathan albeit subtly)--but by Matt maybe taking a minute to reflect on his life up to and especially including the part where Sylar took over.
If all else fails, he could start using his ability to FORCE people to do the right thing...and we all know that that well lit road goes dark fast before you know it...

Re: Siliconera Speaks Up: What Franchise To Save?

I agree, although my personal pet franchise would be the Chrono series. Sooo much potential there. And even after all these years, I'm still a little miffed about the whole Chrono Brake/Break thingy -_-"

But FINAL FANTASY???! Come on people! Like it or not, the FF games are gonna be here for quite some time, Dragonquest, Chrono, and just about any other square enix franchise save Kingdom Hearts be damned! So that would be the last franchise in need of any saving. We get it, the first final fantasy kept a bankrupt squaresoft afloat and in the game, but with literally umpteen sequels and even more spinoffs, I think the franchise has been thanked enough. If anything, I think it's time for some new blood!

Thank God I'm wearing asbestos underwear!
(Let the flaming commence!)

Re: Heroes 4.09 Shadowboxing Promo Video

Yes! It's by far my favorite episode of the season! I haven't felt this satisfied after an episode in a long time. Granted, there have been quite a few this season that have been close. But this one DEFINITELY takes the cake.

Re: Heroes 4.09 Shadowboxing Promo Video

I agree! I didn't really like how they ended up turning the burnt toast diner into somewhere where EVERYBODY important happened to be at the exact same time--heck, I was halfway expecting Peter to be there for NO APPARENT REASON (okay, maybe quarter way, if you take half of the "halfway" and turn it into sarcastic joking...if that makes ANY sense at all...). But like you said, it's a forgiveable flaw, not that big a deal. Just about as awkward as HRG's sexy partner flirtingly refer to the haitian's powers as "Haitianing"...kinda brought back memories of Hatian pills which I'd rather forget...
But then again, even that wasn't so bad as it came back in a cool way at the end of the episode.
In other words, the episode seemed to be lurking with minor flaws just beneath the surface, but overall, I'd say it's definitely one of the most solid parts of the season as a whole--and the thing is, until the twist ending (revealing Samuel's true motive with Hiro), the whole thing about Hiro rescuing Charlie one more time could have played out like something that could have been told in a Graphic Novel or other part of the expanded Heroes experience (whatever their calling it these days...I haven't kept up with that stuff since season 1, which is exactly the point I'm getting at)--where it would have been wasted and only the utmost dedicated fans would really get it, but the mass audience wouldn't; but no, they made an episode out of it and it was AWESOME!!

Re: Heroes 4.09 Shadowboxing Promo Images

WOW!! If anything, Heroes COULD feasibly save him! But I do agree that a lot of people simply gave up on the show after Season 2 and haven't been able to recover and get back with it. Their problem, not ours ;) Besides, Heroes has a huge appeal worldwide, so if it's not so hot domestically, I'm sure internationally it's still carrying its weight in gold! And of course, it's almost legendarily notorious for being the most pirated show online.
On a personal level, it's the only series so far I've made a point of owning on DVD as well as making my regular monday night appointment with the tv screen! In short, I love this show no matter what!

Re: Discussion Thread: Heroes Season 4 Episode 7 (4.07) Strange Attractors

Relax, Name, the show isn't normally that gritty--at least not towards minors.

Re: Heroes 4.08 Once Upon a Time in Texas Promo Video

True, but I guess it just comes down to showing us rather than telling us. Plus, depending on whether you consider his new "screw the butterfly effect" philosophy as an upgrade to his power, I think it would be worth making a 41st attempt under the new parameters. Plus, last time I remember it, Sylar ended up killing her and taking her power--which definitely conflicts with Hiro's ideal of dying with dignity and what-not.

Re: Discussion Thread: Heroes Season 4 Episode 7 (4.07) Strange Attractors

Shoulda known drinking away your demons would be a baaaaaad idea! And then on top of that, make it a two-sided coin: if there are characters he can no longer relate to or no longer feel any ties with, he loses the ability as a consequence. Under these rules, as of this season, Peter would no longer be able to fly for example (no, not because Nathan is technically dead, but rather because Peter has made a point of not really dealing with his brother--then again, under these rules, flight would have been rather challenging for Peter for most of Season 3 as well...but you get where I'm going with this).

"Touch-and-Absorb" Peter (proposition 1)-- Can hold a set number of abilities at a time (like say maybe 3-5), but with each ability he absorbs, he loses another; so lets say he absorbs Flight, Superstrength, and Self-Regeneration (using 3 for simplicity's sake), if he absorbs TimeTravel on top of that, he risks losing any random one of the abilities from above.

If that's too restrictive, let's say he can absorb as many abilities as he wants, but each power has a different shelf life according to how well they suit his personality or overall need (similar to how the abilities were originally implied to work). Since saving people is important to Peter, he may be able to hold a Healer ability longer than say the ability to shapeshift. Again, each power has an unstable half-life, so there are some abilities he can hold for a number of days, some he can barely keep for minutes; he never knows until he absorbs and tries...

Just thought these would be some rather interesting ways to bring Peter closer to his old self without necessarily overpowering him again.
I do agree that Heroes fans are rather hard to please on the subject of Peter's abilities, I mean, let's face it, next to Claire's ability to be an awkward mix of hot and annoying at the same time, he's got the most controversial ability on the show!
Just my ideas on fixing one of the problems in that respect.

Re: Heroes Season 4 Premiere Ratings Are Lowest Yet

I thought that maybe he just learned how to adapt to his new ability to the point where he has to consciously want to absorb the power. My theory really hinges on how the writers treat Peter's interractions with Emma (or whatever the deaf girl's name is). If he accidentally absorbs her power, my theory is bunk. If he somehow consciously acquires it--don't know WHY he'd do that...then maybe I could be on to something.

Re: Heroes Season 4 Premiere Ratings Are Lowest Yet

Actually, I like Peter's character development. I honestly think he's one of the most well-developed characters in the show, granted, his maturation isn't as heavily showcased as much as say Sylar's or even Matt's these days. I liked seeing him struggle with issues of family and trust. Let's face it, between his brother not supporting him in Season One, Adam misguiding in Season 2, his brother AND mother conspiring and withholding secrets (some, but not all of which directly impacted him) in Season 3...I'd say that by season 4, Peter is making a rather respectable decision in wanting to be left alone, and by right, I at least feel he could carry more of a chip on his shoulder about it all, but the fact that he doesn't still says a lot about Pete. Whether it's me overanalyzing, a sign of careful and deliberate characterization by the writers, or perhaps a fluke on their part, I find Peter to be a more tempered form of who he was all along: a caring person who does in fact believe in the goodness of humanity and wants to help people to the best of his ability. Of course, my assessment does not factor in the whole "Petrelli Guilt" which does seem to be implied to be a motivation for his good deeds as a paramedic...

Re: Heroes Preview: Season 4 Episode 4 (4.04) Acceptance

It is nice to see a like mind among the fandom. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE THIS SHOW! When it first came out, I had all but stopped watching tv entirely. When I finally did get into it around the fourth or fifth episode of season 1, I instantly fell in love with it. To this day, even in this age of Tivo and DVR, I make a point of making facetime with the television set on Monday nights for this show (granted, I can't do that now because I take night classes, but my heart is still there for this show like that!)
I guess it just irritates me when fans pretend the show is utterly perfect and that there's not a single flaw to be found.

Re: Heroes Preview: Season 4 Episode 4 (4.04) Acceptance

I forgot all about the necessary cover story for that situation. I guess I was more worried about how the head of a major national company (Yamagato) disappears for months at a time and NO ONE starts an investigation to look for him. Granted, Hiro seems to be more of a figurehead for his father's company anyway, but not even the slightest mention? They could have thrown the situation a bone on the news he and Ando saw at Parkman's while looking for baby Matt or something.
I hate playing devil's advocate with KG sometimes, but when he's right, he's right. It's the little things in the whole attention-to-detail package that seem to make the show a lot less than what it could be.
However, I'm quite less skeptical on the shelf life of this show. I got a feeling it'll survive as a niche show until the writing crew REALLY gets its act together. So far, they're off to a good start...which was exactly what I thought about season 3 once upon a time, which ultimately proved to have a rather unsavory balance of good, bad, and ugly moments. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things turn out with this present course.
As always, I'm hoping for the best!
