I'll be down in CPT December and I have a bike down there so I'll be joining in on one of these rides :)

Re: The Big Bike Beat Down

There's an awesome hill climb that I normally ride when in Cape Town - it starts from the quarry area in Tamboerskloof and then swings up and up to Signal Hill. Looks like you guys did a section of it - nice ride!

Re: BlackNotes

I agree.
I think it's a bit opportunistic, which is great for the cause of Autism, but it does detract from the larger message of Autism. I feel there is a larger focus on "how we did this" than "what is autism"
I don't think it is authentic and that's what is pissing people off.

Re: Oppikoppi on m.24.com, an opportunity lost?

What you might rather want to do is build a platform that will allow you to do the same for future events - so that you don't just do a once off.

Speakerbox will hopefully be able to be a platform for that.

Re: More on the maturing web- and the decline of banner ads

Yeah Rob, I also remember Clint saying "Ok, so you want a banner ad... I can give that to you in an hour" and it's BORING! Apps are so much more fun to make :)

Re: Signs of a maturing web?

That's what I'm trying to say - You used to be able to build Facebook as a one man show, but that was, what, almost 4 years ago? Facebook now has in the region of 500 employees. If you want to ramp up your startup, you need people.

Digg _was_ a one man show, but Mixx isn't/wasn't. Basecamp is 10, dedicated employees.

I think what I'm trying to say, if you want your app to be popular you really need to dedicate time and effort to it (probably goes without saying). I will most definately be wrong if I say "the next great app won't come from a garage-based startup" but I think it is significantly more difficult for garage startups to compete in this market. The reason: The web has matured and larger players are throwing more money at it.

Ernst, I do hope we'll see more and more web apps (which is very good thing), but I wonder if they'll be niche, while the big stuff like Android, Open Social, Facebook Connect, AIR, Silverlight, will come from already big established players.

It's not a university student pushing out the next thing, it's a research division within the university.

Re: 24.com launches Answer.it, gets deeper into the social web

Hey Mark,
I'm still not a huge fan of clones, and I think there are lots of other ways to do interesting things. However, I now work for a large corporate and I understand the thinking behind many of the business's, Play for example does not intend to rival Youtube, Zoopy or Myvideo - It's purely there to serve the 24.com brands. The technology to embed the videos and spread is there, but it's not built with that in mind.
Same with some of the other products. If you have a large enough community then you could roll a digg for them, just because it's localised doesn't mean too much.
