Let's me get this history lesson straight (assuming three fifths of my brain works). The reason The Three Fifths clause exists was because, Southern slave owners wanted slaves to be counted as a full person? And all this time I thought it was because folks didn't want to pay more taxes. Counting three fifths of the slaves in apportioning representation was a byproduct of the compromise; not the intent.

Yes, Southern states wanted representation based on population but that should not imply citizenship rights for slaves. Counting slaves in the population numbers of the South gave the slaves no inherent rights of citizenship or representation, since they were still the property of the slave owner. Slaves couldn't vote.

Does Beck ever listen to the bullshit he drivels from his lips? What self-respecting Southern slave owner would give equal rights to hundreds of slaves on his farm? If Nat Turner and Denmark Vesey scared the shit out of White folk, what the hell would voting slaves do?

Why would any Black person call Glenn Beck and attempt to get him to come correct? I think that caller was actually a Black Stand-In from the Al Jolson Stand-In Academy.

I agree with you about civilians not knowing the depth of issues faced by men and women in combat. Certainly more needs to be done on the behalf of those suffering from depression and other emotional conflicts.

The tragedy at Fort Hood, like the tragedies at Virginia Tech, Columbine, the LA Fitness Club in Bridgeville (PA.), Orlando (FL.) and other locations point to individuals who were seriously troubled. That is little comfort to the familes of men and women innocently killed because a person was "troubled".

All I've heard and read are the theories of people who have no access to the mind of a murderer. As far as I can tell, this Major never ever saw combat firsthand. Some theorize that he was under some degree of stress. None of us knows why this man did what he did; we may never know.

I would think any practicing psychiatrist would need to have a colleague available to discuss emotional trauma. We have resources in this country and yet, there somehow is a disconnect. How is it that we have access to information and interviews after a tragic murder spree and not before?

I read an interview of a Muslim citizen who indicated that when he heard of the tragedy at Fort Hood, he prayed that it wasn't a Muslim responsible. That's the reality of the world we live in: No one wants to be connected to or tainted by the shameful acts of a mass murderer.

The truth is that we live in a violent society and many now believe the method to achieve their goals is through violence. As someone who's lost a brother to murder, there are no plausible explanations that offer comfort and there is no justice punitive enough; there is only the loss of a life cut short.

I don't what the motive is to this but I think it was disingenuous of all involved to have a part in this. On one hand we have Harry Connick Jr. chiding Australians for using blackface and then we have the host of a talent show having women in ethnic makeup?

It trivializes what we say about race to Whites.

I find it just plain embarrassing but I admit I don't know all the facts surrounding this.

As a father, I can't identify with this type of parental behavior. I'm not even going to say anything about the aunt's "food stamp card" comment. It's trifling behavior like this that just makes me wonder why get pregnant? If you prefer shopping instead of nurturing and raising a child (dependent on you) for the next 18 years, don't get pregnant. If you have a baby but you prefer shopping, then give the child up for adoption to someone who actually wants to be a parent!

This is some messed up shit brother. What do you think that Chinese man would think of this woman's parenting skills. Unlike his perception of you in the restroom, there's no mistaking who did what.

"Bad parenting" is a convenient scapegoat for individual choice and responsibility. The history of our country is steeped in violence. From southern Whites who brought their children to watch a lynching to urban Blacks who initiate a gang member with a beating. The common thread is violence; not bad parenting.

I had already written a post about this same issue (decided to post it tomorrow) when I saw that you had blogged about this culture of violence in our country. America is rooted in violent acts and the convenience and accessibility to act out violence isn't confined to the Black community. As a society, we use violence to address conflict resolution. We use violence to intimidate and impose our will on others.

Is this death tragic? Yes, but no more tragic than the bombs dropped on the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or the Oklahoma City bombing of a federal building by Timothy McVeigh. Every instance of a life snuffed out in America will usually be rooted in a violent act.

My hope after the election was that President Obama would make history as a statesman, not just being the first Black president.

Perhaps the influence of big business and wealthy capitalists are the ones who have the real say in how the country is run.

I wanted change but I've seen ethically-bankrupt executives build a house of cards based on greed. Their reward for this behavior? Government-sponsored financial bailouts. Billions of dollars have been paid out to failing businesses while schools around the country have been closed.

I didn't agree with some of the decisions coming from the President but I continue to support him because I still believe he wants to bring change to our society.

If I said anything about the congressman, I would just be venting and he doesn't even deserve that from me.

The system is messed up; there can be no argument. While conservatives cloud the real issues and problems in this country, Black citizens continue to be to segmented and polarized.

I can only say each event has had an impact on my life but in totally different ways. I visited NY after 911 and I visited New Orleans after Katrina. In New York, I felt sadness but I didn't feel a connection. In New Orleans, I met people who were just trying to stay afloat. The thing that struck me was that there was a genuine warmth and kinship that I felt; a connection to the people, they interacted with me.

I haven't been to NY or New Orleans since those visits, but Katrina became a catalyst for giving what I could to help those in need.
