What's "ewww" about people's looks. The only people who find it "ewww" are people uncomfortable with their own look.

As for the research itself. As with many "scientific" researches it tends to take one single component and study in isolation, ignoring the context and related factors.

The thing with "looks"... and "ambition" is that those are very subjective.

What's interesting is that a woman can increased her perceived "looks" by the way she acts. Several other experiments have shown, that if a woman is an experienced flirt, her "physical looks" rating can jump from a 5, to as much as a 10!!

In the same regard, women choosing "ambitious men"... comes into subjectivness as the greatest "playas" tend to be men who have a way of acting, a charisma about them that communicates ambition...

...when in reality they could be living in their mom's basement and on social welfare, as many psychopathic "bad boys" are....

Yeah I noticed the same NoManhole... It seems there's a divide.

What happened is that during the women's movement thing, they took things too far, where it went from a search for equality, to creating this world of super-bitchy, rude, control-obssesed women who think smiling is a sign of weakness, and grace is a sign of submission. While seeing catty and rude behaviour as somehow being "strong".

Now...

Some of the smarter man (me included) would just like to see a return to balance.

The other ones, seem to want to see a return to long-ago... CaveMan days...

Many experiments have been done in humans. Obviously not with tubes... but with videos and photos. Men are always deemed more attractive physically if they are with attractive women in the photo.
Its pretty much already proven in humans, this experiment was interesting because they didn't expect to find it in insects.

Those of us who WANT to buy legal, but apple doesn't **allow** us to. The iphone and ipod touch are sold in over what... 90 countries or something? But the appstore only supports like 12 countries or so.

I WANT to buy apps. But I've tried everything to get the itunes store to accept me, including a paypal account where I tried everything from virtual credit-cards to opening a paypal account for that purpose specifically.

What's the worth of an iphone or ipod with no apps? Very little, right? I might be just about to crack and go to the dark-side any day now.

I think the word "offensive" is used too much these days, and its starting to tick me off. We're becoming a society where every one has something they're offended by.

How do you know the baby is dead? Does it say its dead? That's just a subjective interpretation. It shows 2 red X's over the eyes. That's it. It might just mean that you failed at the rocking.

I will agree with a previous commenter- the only problem with this article is that it ended. You had me hooked and wide eyed from start to finish.

And I would nominate this as the single best piece in mra ever written. At least from what I've read.

I Especially like how you manage to display and communicate mens frustrations without no one iota of bitterness, but in fact with a sort of warm composed dignity. In general the beaty of this article is that I feel I can send it to anyone except the most radical of feminists. Most sane normal men and women can read this article and be nodding even if they have no mra background.

I agree with C.Munro - the biggest issue isn't the subtlety, its the inconsistency.

Ya, we suck at subtlety, but as we get older, and more experienced, we pick up more and more of the subtle stuff, until we can see most of it.

The real problem? Inconsistency. No two women send the same set of signals with the exact same meaning.

So while experience allows us to improve our odds of guessing right, we are always guessing and there's always a chance of guessing wrong.

I disagree with the gym thing. I love it when girls hit on me in the gym.In fact, if she loves me when I'm at my sweatiest, than that's a good sign. Great Article Tara. I love seeing this side covered as well. The women chasing jerks is often covered, but this side is never covered, i.e. guys who get off on "bitches".

I've been trying to explain this to guys for a while, and I think its cultural. A guy will complain to me "all the hot women are bitches"... and I will go... "no, you're attracted to bitches", lol.

There's a woman who looks JUST LIKE HER, and is kinder, nicer, but doesn't act snotty, so you don't even notice her.

If we are ever to escape our male-role imposed by society, we need to escape the lie we are being sold on whom to be attracted to. The media keeps brainwashing us that "bitch=hot". So we perpetuate the cycle.

Well there is one part of the cokplaints that is true. I definetely dont agree that all women are like that-in fact i think theres an equal number of bad men and women.

The part that some people brought up and IS true however is this:

society does give such women a pass and even encourages them... While demonizing men for everything. Heck a part of the pop culture even represents the "talk to the hand" behaviour as somehow empowering. So there is that part.
