After playing marines for a while, I just assume that the Rhinos come with smoke and search lights. Old codex!

Re: Bell of Lost Souls - 'Ard Boyz Semi-Finals Scenarios

I finished 3rd here in Colorado, though I'll not be going to the finals in Baltimore. Already at a conference that week. I used dual-lash Chaos:

2x Chaos Sorcerer, Mark of Slaanesh, Lash of Submission, melta bombs
3x 8 Plague Marines, 2 meltas, Champion, powerfist, personal icon, Rhino
2x 7 Noise Marines, 6 sonic blasters, 1 blastmaster, Rhino
7 Noise Marines, 6 sonic blasters, Champion with Doom Siren and meltabombs
2x 3 Obliterators
Chaos Land Raider, Daemonic Possession

First round massacred a dual-Wing Dark Angels player. He got hampered by the fact that only one of his 6 squads of terminators arrived on turn two. Next round suffered a Major Defeat against a mech-sisters army (which eventually won second). Made some mental mistakes, and combined that with some poor dice rolling. Third round massacred a Tyranid player who had mostly souped-up gaunts, not very much shooty. Here Lash was absolutely key.

I think the mech-sisters army I faced is a really, really strong list and likely one that will go far. I'll try to reproduce it from memory:

2x Cannoness with book and eviscerator, 5 celestians, 2 meltaguns, Immolator
2x 5 Celestians, 2 meltaguns, VSS with book, Immolator
DH Inquisitor, Emperor's Tarot, 2 mystics, 2 Heirophants
2x 10 Sisters, heavy flamer/flamer, VSS with book, Rhino
4x 10 Sisters, heavy flamer/meltagun, VSS with book, meltabombs, Rhino
3x Exorcist

Since dedicated transports don't give up KPs, this list becomes much nastier. It can take on hordes, LR lists, and light-armor spam equally well.

Re: 2008 'Ardboyz Semi-finals Missions

Well, you can hold the HQs in reserve voluntarily, and have them come on with the Troops choice. That's what I'd do, anyway.

Re: 2008 'Ardboyz Semi-finals Missions

Maybe, but that's also the KP mission, so they won't need their Troops on the board to claim objectives - and to be fair, Guard Troops are usually pretty squishy anyway, so why start them on the board if you don't have to?

Re: Bell of Lost Souls - 'Ard Boyz Semi-Finals Scenarios

Basically the same missions as before, shuffled around a bit and with different deployments. There's a tool I've found works pretty well, a designated circle cutter, can usually be found fairly cheap at most craft stores. Still, yours is a nice way of doing it, and can be extended to apply to army displays as well in a pinch.

Re: My Deathwing Assault Force

I'd love to see pics of those assault squads, then!

Re: My Deathwing Assault Force

Yup, 2nd ed/RT era chaos dreadnought! I have three of those babies, though I've given them a few extra weapons here and there and am currently using them as Obliterators in my Death Guard army!

Also, what other models in the range have feathers, or which other ranges are good for them? Have you come up with a good way of sculpting them? I'm interested in doing a native-american themed SM army, and need to get a bunch of feathers and stuff.

Re: Breaking the Space Marine Codex: Part 2

I'd consider adding more combimeltas to the Sternguard. I'd think at least half of them should have combimeltas. I might drop the power weapon for this, at least on one squad (the one with the librarian) - if they get in combat, Gate them away, come in using the locator beacons, and shoot again.

And that's only 15 KPs, by my reckoning.

Re: CHALLENGE: Pimp My Night Lords

I also see a unit of Raptors there. What's the info on those?

Re: Thoughts on Marines and Chaos...

I'm in agreement with most of your points, though I don't think there will be as much poor stuff in the codex. Vanguard are truly only nasty when combined with Locator Beacons and Shrike, and maxed out. Sternguard are more flexible overall, however. The Thunderfire Cannon looks really cool, until you realize it's a single piece of artillery (hence blows up on a glancing or penetrating hit) with a 1W crewman (albeit with a 2+ save, but still). Everything else seems really cool and actually useful. They did do an effective job more or less killing off the DA/BA lists, though (with the exception of Deathwing and all-jump-pack BA).

In tournaments, I imagine most new lists will have sternguard, drop pods/razorbacks, Vulkan/Pedro, and/or Ironclad Dreadnoughts in some combination. There will be a few particular lists played out over and over. But as a codex, I think the new Marine one is much better thought out than the old Chaos one, even - the old Chaos codex let you bling out your characters and squad leaders, but this is more of an over-all change.

Re: BoLS Polls: Play for the Love Edition

Of course, the fact that the Dark Elves just got a new codex full of power-goodies had nothing to do with your decision, either. :D

I started out with Chaos because that's what my very first gaming group hadn't yet chosen, and because I liked the idea of using some units in both game systems. Finally, I can now do that after all these years!

I started my Eldar because of the new models I saw coming out, and because of the sleek lines and paint schemes. I'd been kicking around the idea of doing something different after playing CSM for 8 years, and I wanted something that didn't have power armor!

I started Chaos Daemons because I had the models (see above re: CSM for 8 years).

I'm planning on starting Tau because again, I like the sleek lines, and look forward to using a firepower-heavy force. I also want to try out some urban camo schemes. It helps that I won the battleforce for ArdBoyz!

Re: Breaking the Space Marine Codex: Part 1

Or, in a doubles game - Locator Beacons and Daemons!

Re: Breaking the Space Marine Codex: Part 1

I might consider swapping that Seraphim squad for a Dominion squad with 4 meltas or 4 flamers. I'd also be tempted to shrink those Celestian squads to put them in Immolators (who unfortunately are already twin-linked), but would give you more room for possibly another tac squad or so, or if nothing else another Dread. That'd be even more nasty.

Re: 'Ard Boyz List: Imperial Guard

Thanks! Went fairly well. First round was against the Ork list with ~200 models, including Zogwart, Ghazghul with nobs, and zagstruk with 20 vulcha boyz, played by a friend of mine. Didn't have quite enough firepower to take them all out, and ended up with a draw with less than 20 models between us left on the board. He ended up placing third, tied for second, with a point less than I (59 vs 58).

Second round was against an AC, actually. He deployed first, but set up against his table edge. Naturally, I put all my Rhinos with Troops and HQs on the 24" line. He wasn't able to stop any rhinos except one that didn't matter in turn 1, and smoke stopped most shots on turn 2 (when he had all 7 LR tanks in). That turn I got out, DS'd both oblit squads, and blew up 6/7 tanks with melta shots/melta bombs in close combat. If you go with AC in the future, consider the ceramite ablative armor. It was mop-up after that, tabled in turn 6 because he hid his techpriest off in a corner.

Third round was against a generic Ultras player, main deal 2x10 Terminators, dual asscannon, with 4 tac squads, 2 5-man havoc squads with mixed weapons, and a Chap and Libby. Rhino walled and picked off one tac squad at a time, killed most of the terminators by plasma cannoning them after they deep-struck. Tabled again by turn 6.

Re: 'Ard Boyz List: Imperial Guard

My 59 was from a draw and two complete massacres.

Re: 'Ard Boyz List: Imperial Guard

As the winner at Valhallas, my list only had 6 oblits, thankyouverymuch! :D And I did also take noise marines.

Re: 'Ard Boyz List: Imperial Guard

Wheatridge, CO, was:
1. Might consider something other than grenade launchers for the linemen, though I assume you have plenty as is. Same with sharpshooters, maybe not really worth the points? That's probably at least another squad of sentinels. Probably a good list even with KP.

Re: 'Ard Boyz: Kill Point Errata

I really don't think that this is the correct way to interpret the rules. As someone pointed out, they can make a 265-model IG army, all infantry, with tons of special and heavy weapons (more than enough to be competitive) - for 6 KP. There's a very good chance that IG played like that won't give up a SINGLE KP. That's ridiculous.

On the other hand, take that exact same army, play it using KP as per unit choice, and the KP in the army goes up to somewhere around 48. So Guard are either really, really good or really, really screwed in KP.

Re: 'Ard Boyz: Round 1 Missions!!!

I'm pretty sure it's by choices for VP - an HQ choice is 3 KP each - which implies that units that are bought from HQ but count as separate units or as retinues give up 3 KP each. In any case, this definitely favors small KP, highly mobile armies - bike Orks, bike council/mech eldar, I think possibly even mech-Guard if played carefully.

It did cause me to change my army up a bit - I dropped a few plague marines and gave all 6 of my troops squads Rhinos. Mobility, even pseduo-mobility, is good. It also convinced me to switch to sorcerers instead of DPs, as in at least two of the missions you really need your HQs to be alive at the end if possible.

As for giving up a point for not having a FA slot, I don't mind that too much. Quite frankly, I don't mind giving up points, so long as I can get as many for myself as possible!

Re: 'Ard Boyz List: Chaos Daemons!

Well, then if not daemonettes, then perhaps Seekers or Fiends. Honestly, I think both are better values than base daemonettes for the points cost, but they do suffer from the face that they're not Troops, which means you rely heavily on the Plaguebearers. That's doable at 1750, 1850, but probably not at 2500.

Re: 'Ard Boyz List: Chaos Daemons!

Yikes, 9 Flamers! That's massive overkill against just about anything. I also think you might have a hard time getting all of those Breath of Chaos attacks against a unit without hitting your own guys. I much prefer two suicide squads of 3 each - it's about the right amount, given a good scatter, to take down a 10-man marine squad, and if they're lost, so be it, as they've often more than made their points back.
