My senior year of school was spent going to college instead of high school through the post secondary program with the exception of my vocational classes that I was still taking. Three months out of high school I landed a position as a Draftsman with a pretty good company. I was going to school at a community college part time and making $35,000 my first year out of school.

I worked there for almost two years until they shut down when the economy crashed. I had just bought a newer house at the age of nineteen and had needed a job to pay for my new mortgage. I found a job with a small company basically being their entire engineering department only one short month after my former company had closed. I was chosen over other candidates that had their BS in Mechanical Engineering because of the experience and the work that I had gained at the previous company and was now making $45,000 /yr.

I did that job for six months before I was offered a much better opportunity with a large company that had much more to offer. I worked there for a year as a Mechanical Designer and after a year I was promoted to a Project Engineer making $70,000 a year just over three years out of high school.

I am still working on my degree part time and my company is paying for it and I have only taken $4,000 in student loans. My whole point is that there are other paths out there for people to take. I know my situation is unique and I was lucky to land my first position. I did have certificates and other experienced that I had gained in my vocational program which was one of the majoring factors as to how I received my first position.

I have worked hard and at the age of twenty-two, I have now made approximately $150,000 and only spent $5,000 on schooling. I have a house that I own and am in much better shape then a high percentage of people my age. I find it amazing that some of the people that are working under me have their BS degrees, no experience, and have $150,000 in student loans.

Re: One of These Things Is Not Like the Other… SolidWorks Visual Properties

That is the great thing about the Solidworks community. There are alot of people who help others and share their knowledge. It seems like you can always find the answer to your question in a blog or from someone else.

Re: 6 Ways to Improve the Heck Out of This SolidWorks Parts

I spend a lot of time fixing models from another guy but the problem is that he was fired over six months ago. Everything he did from his whole year here seems to be messed up and cause a lot of issues when parts are ordered. Unfortunately I have no other option than to rework it.

Re: Not a CSWP? Occasionally when I try to open one of my huge projects from my desktop on my laptop I have some performance issues. Wait, what am I saying? I have quite a few performance issues here at work even with an upgraded desktop. Screen size it what pulls me to my desktop.

Re: Friday Smackdown: They Crawl

Klok is proving to be a very useful tool for me. I am able to keep track of my total project hours with ease. It is also going to help me when the end of the month rolls around and I have to do my dreaded monthly time sheet. It's alot easier to click the start working and stop working after you load your projects than what it is to try and remember to write it down at the end of each day.

Re: Merry Christmas. The worst part of the situation is the fact that they just switched to Solidworks in our French facility and we are trying to unify our engineering between the two companies. They just bought new systems and are running Solidworks 2009 in France while were in 2007 here so it makes sharing drawings extremely difficult.

Re: SolidWorks Users Crave Useful Add-In. We are a smaller company maybe 100-125 employees between here in the US and our other facility in France. There are only a handful of us working in the engineering department and only two of us use Solidworks. Our biggest problem at the moment is the fact that they had bought 2005 and then paid for the subscription for a couple years and then let it cancel. Now that it cancelled were looking at big fees to renew it. I keep trying to push the CEO and my engineering manager and hoping that its going to be a good christmas.

Re: SolidWorks Users Crave Useful Add-In. I downloaded it and went to install it and it wouldn't install. I then noticed it is only for Solidworks 2009. Now if I could only find some way to convince them that we need to renew our subscription.

Re: SolidWorks Tips To Import Sketches and Enjoy People's Company

I have had to convert alot of old ACAD files into Solidworks. I have found, after many headaches and a few bottles of tylenol, that converting to polylines and joing them saves alot of pain. After I create my polyline, I move it so that the desired point is at the origin. I then right click my polyline and copy it. Next, I open up a new part file in Solidworks and paste it in. If it is not on the desired plane, I just right click the sketch in the feature manager and click edit sketch plane. This is what I have found that seems to work the best for me.

Re: Friday Smackdown: Mighty Delicious

Now I have my own little robot sitting on the top of my monitor.....
