Drinking in Thailand is more than often seen as a means to get drunk rather than a means through which to enjoy beer. With that said, I do enjoy a beer or two (or three) without being a drunkard but still struggle with how this relates to my presence on the field...

While I've been offered a to sit and have a beer with a neighbor or two from time to time, I seldom do so. Not because I wouldn't love to do so, but because what it could possibly mean if I did so... The organization I work with sees beer as very cut-and-dry "no" in most situations... "It doesn't help the witness" is something that they would say...

So in being a team-player, seldom to I join in. Instead I retreat to my man-cave of an office to enjoy a private beer to myself wishing I was out there creating a good name for beer enthusiasts and weekend drinkers alike...

My problem is that I can't seem to find exactly where I stand. In one sense, I believe I am in the right that I refuse drinks from my drunken Thai neighbors... On another hand, I wish I had the opportunity to show them how to love God and enjoy beer at the same time...

I wish the answer was an easy one, but I'm yet to find it... How can I feel so right and so wrong at the same time when enjoying a local beer with my Thai friends and neighbors?

Re: How to pour a Guinness?

I guess my experience has been with widgets in the glass bottles of Guinness. The widget just sits on the bottle of the bottle. The first time I drank one, I was told to spin it around (like I was trying to make one of those tornadoes in a bottle) before cracking the seal... I mean, it worked an all, but I've always been a bit hesitant to go twirling my beer before opening it!

Re: How to pour a Guinness?

For some reason, I always understood that I needed to spin the widget in the bottom of the can or bottle before opening... that somehow this activated the nitrogen... I'm a afraid that all I did was pour a flat beer! Great tip this week...

Re: Cults, Christians, and Lager – Where did the idea that alcohol was a sin come from?

I'm really digging the history lessons around here. We're starting to see some more micro-breweries/local breweries open up, but the few that I've tasted were awful! You can find San Miguel (and San Miguel Light) along with Heineken in abundance in Thailand, but that's because they are actually bottled here in the country (avoiding the steep liquor import tax)... American light beers are pretty much non-existent. But then again, if they were here, I'm not sure I'd pay $15 for a Bud Light! Most of the Thai beers are lagers and about 5% Alcohol by volume...

I know you can find Thai Singha Beer in the US in a few places, so keep your eyes open if you are interested in trying one...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Re: Learn the Language of Beer [Infographic]

Awesome graphic! I know you've done the lighter survival opener back in the day, but there are some other good ones. I prefer to use where the door latches inside of a door way. You can simple use that square hole as a lever. I've also opened a beer using another beer. Just prying against each other... And I'm sure there are more... We should never be without proper knowledge and skills when in a tough situation like losing your bottle opener.

Re: Mini Fridge Beer Cannon of AWESOMENESS!

That is full of WIN!!!! Maybe I should say Jesus. I mean, after all, isn't that answer to 70% of the Sunday School questions? And I probably would chose that, but as I read in so many of the Gospels, the disciples just had little-to-no idea of what He was actually saying at the time. I'd be afraid I'd still be that guy... nodding fervently with a glazed smile on my face, but still have no idea just what He meant. But still, I choose Jesus right after kicking over tables at the temple.

My second choice would be the Apostle Paul. I can identify with his sinfulness both before and after coming to Christ. A beer with that dude would be sweet...

Thirdly, if the other two weren't available, I'd assemble a small group of my closest friends sitting on a front porch at midnight with enough beer to keep us busy... Being 8,000 miles away from home, I often miss those times the most...

Re: Does this verse make me look fat?

I've been back to this post a few times today, Jamie. You're welcome for the traffic! ;-)

There is a difference between Adidas soccer balls made my child laborers and jeans made in what we would call "sweat shops" from our US point of view. Several of our Thai friends here in SE Asia work in "sweat shop" conditions. Be it making micro-electronic-circuitry, every shirt and tie hanging in a Target store, or any piece of carved teak wood sitting in a Pier 1 store back home. These provide "good" jobs for our friends. Sure, they work long, hard hours in less than stellar conditions, but they put their kids through school, buy meals, and are even able to take out loans to purchase cars beyond their financial means..

But a 40 year old mother choosing to work under the conditions is different than a kid forced (either true slavery or family-forced slavery) to work under these conditions is where I draw the line... ...if I can. Who knows how many Chinese kids' fingers have been on my iPod earbuds before they made it to the store? And as much as I want to boycott Carrefour for having a horrible human rights record, I still shop there from time to time because they are the only store nearby that sells tortilla chips.

So I guess my conviction only goes as deep as tortilla chips... ...sadly. I couldn't care less about jeans...

Re: Ask Your Missionaries Awkward Questions

We had a similar question asked in the months leading up to our coming to Thailand. A close friend of ours moved his family to West Africa for missions work as they had always felt called there, only to return a year later saying that the money which they needed to live in work in that country as a family from the US could support 10-12 local Christian workers (who could presumably "accomplish" more).

As a close friend, we had a long conversation on this very topic. He was also a bit of a hot-headed guy, but a friend none-the-less. We have to realize that what may be best (most cost-effective use of God's monies) in a certain country, people group, or even individual village, can't not simply be blanketed across all other countries, peoples or villages.

And I agree... it is the hard questions that need asking. At least then we know people are truly wrestling with how best to serve God with their time, finances, etc...

Re: Deep fried awesome.

Corn dogs.
