I might not love every single movie, every single great director did, I might even dislike some (like Vertigo, to name one), but I probably wouldn't discard any of their films since even at their worst, their skill and talent comes across in one way or another. That's what I was talking about.

Re: SoundWorks Collection - The Sound and Music of Oblivion

Since when are specific sound fx from movies publicly available? Bad circumstances exist, obviously, yet even on the worst of scenarios, great directors should be able to pull off a decent movie. If what they do is horrible or mediocre, then they probably aren't all that great.

If that were true (that directors, no matter how great, could be easily limited) then directors wouldn't be all that important. Just think about it.
It's obviously the directors who are sometimes interested in pursuing more commercial material, rather than studios being interested in trusting their most valuable properties to "auteur" directors who most often don't have a good track record at the box office.
So if these kind of directors sometimes do more popular stuff, I assume that it is because they genuinely want to.

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson Admires Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy

A great director, is a great director always, no matter what the material at hand is. It is their choice whether to do a more commercial film, or a more personal one. They wouldn't be so great if the resulting movie was mediocre, or if they simply did it for the money.

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson Admires Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy

Err.. And how no one has ever offered him to do that. He didn't even said that he likes them (even though it seems to be implied in his words).
I hate that article title manipulation game, trying to make a story out of nothing in order to get hits. I hate myself even more for having fallen for it.

Re: Paul Thomas Anderson Admires Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy

At least you watch Louie. And Jurassic Park was a serious live action movie, while this one is a kids-oriented animated film, so you can't really get anything from comparing them.
Creating mind-blowing sounds for the sake of awesomeness is a pointless endeavor if it's not in the service of the story and in this case I think it totally sold the believability of the dragons as living creatures that breathe and think.
