I was just sitting in bed watching the Rockford Files (RIP James Garner) the other night and got the notification of your reply and it struck me that our 'conversations' are more like a chess game than a productive exchange of ideas. Unfortunate, but definitely symptomatic of the political divide that currently exists in our country.

As to AGW, I believe there is far more evidence that casts doubt upon our ability to affect global temperatures - that's not to say that reasonable measures should not be in place to safeguard the environmental health of our planet. We've certainly made great progress since the 70's but I see carbon regulation as a means of control (and profit generation) rather than a realistic solution to naturally changing climate patterns.

Re: The Frog in the Pan

Well geesh Henry, nothing like waiting nearly a month to respond - thought we were done with this? As a fan of tu quoque (and the Ruy Lopez opening), I must point out that you neglected to respond to my points as well. Perhaps we'll meet again in Congress at some point in the future. The link you mentioned was simply provided as an after thought to a previous conversation and I didn't think it merited further discussion - certainly not the focus of the question I was attempting to raise. Given what's being proposed, it seems reasonable to ask for some degree of proof before turning our lives upside down and relinquishing so much control to a central authority. Not sure AGW is on par with the theory of evolution or the age of our planet. Some might argue that both sides of this debate could have members belonging to the flat earth society. Please see my previous comments for further points that I could make.

Re: The Frog in the Pan

Henry, I'll say it again.. sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's cold and sometimes, it's just right. Where is the conclusive evidence that anthropogenic warming exists? We have numerous credible examples of warming and cooling trends throughout history. Even many of the AW crowd use graphs showing steady warming since the 1800's - less people, less industry, more forest, healthier oceans, yet the earth is still warming?

The current agenda and funding based 'science' is all over the place these days but even if they can occasionally get together to agree on something, it still doesn't make any sort of connection between human activity and naturally occurring cycles on the earth (or the sun for that matter). Of course that means that I must be pro pollution and a gov't skeptic - I guess you'd be half right on that one. Let's recycle, keep reasonable pollution laws in place and generally be good stewards of the earth without living under the thumb of a new carbon bureaucracy that only serves to line the pockets of those on the team while keeping the rest of us penitently bowing at the green alter with our wallets open and our minds closed.

http://canadafreepress.com/...

Re: The Frog in the Pan

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/...

Re: The Frog in the Pan

Henry, I wouldn't suggest that you live in a cave, allegorical or otherwise, but the incremental changes that Mr. Gilbert speaks of are indeed noticed by the frog and he (or she) then jumps out of the pan. That is not the issue. I will concede that big oil stands to benefit tremendously from a status quo arrangement on climate change but in all fairness, Mr. Gore and many of the UN carbon credit crowd, stand to gain equally from a warming hysteria mentality. The hypocrisy thrives on both sides of the thermostat dial. I've debated this at length in the past and would argue that the science on this matter is anything but settled. Studies are slanted, measurements are flawed, agendas are pushed and most importantly, there is absolutely no conclusive evidence that anthropogenic warming exists. Eric the Red, the Vostok ice cores, Siberian tree ring studies, the Medieval warming period.. Despite the fact that global temperatures have stabilized or actually decreased over the last 15 years, how is it that recorded temperatures were higher during periods in our history that were devoid of any fossil fuel exploitation? When I was a lad, we were told that we were in for another ice age by this time. The climate does indeed change, it has since the earth was formed. Sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's cold.. sometimes, it's just right.

I'm all for alternative energy. As soon as a commercially viable option presents itself, I'm sure the market will see it to fruition. Wonder whatever happened to Bush's big hydrogen push or Tesla's free energy machine..

Re: The Frog in the Pan

Most believe the frog in a pan story to be a known fact but after researching it for a blog piece several years ago, I found it to be untrue.. much like most of what's perceived to be 'climate science' these days. Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital pocket litter.”

http://www.foxnews.com/tech...

Drake -- who worked at the NSA from Aug. 2001 to Aug. 2008 and was unsuccessfully prosecuted on espionage charges -- says Americans should be concerned about letting the government go too far in the name of security.

"It's in secret so you don't really know," Drake explained. "It's benign, right. If I haven't -- and if I haven't done anything wrong it doesn't matter. The only way you can have perfect security is have a perfect surveillance state. That's George Orwell. That's 1984. That's what that would look like."

Fellow NSA whistleblower Bill Binney, who worked at the NSA for nearly four decades, says it's about the possibility that the government's stunning new capacity to collect, store and analyze data could be abused.

"It's really a-- turnkey situation, where it could be turned quickly and become a totalitarian state pretty quickly," he said. "The capacities to do that is being set up. Now it's a question of if we get the wrong person in office, or if certain people set up their network internally in government, they could make that happen quickly."

According to NSA's chief compliance officer John Delong, whose job is to make sure the laws and policies designed to protect the privacy of U.S. persons is being enforced, part of the frustration is that the rules are specific and secret.

Re: Why even the rich should worry about income inequality

Bob, I would have to agree completely but I think it still speaks poorly of our nation to have such an extreme disparity. While I have not crossed over to the dark side entirely, I'd like to find a way to remedy the situation w/o making a full leap into the ever welcoming waters of socialism.. perhaps just a toe now and then. Of course, a substantial percentage of the 'less fortunate' exist in that state by choice. Over time, ants naturally trend towards the grasshopper lifestyle when given/allowed the chance. Not sure there's any convenient solution to be found. Not sure that indefinitely extending unemployment benefits is a better solution than addressing the economic and regulatory issues that prevent our nation from developing an abundance of decent jobs.

In my haste to paste a reply from old emails, I forgot to include that my suggestion was to give $2,000 per month to those families making less than $35k per year rather than the Swiss plan that would have given $2,800 to every individual. Again, ONLY once we've gotten our fiscal house in order which seems about as likely as hearing the real truth from the mainstream media these days.

While all men are indeed created equal, I would also prefer that the gov't constrained itself to ensuring equal opportunity rather than equal outcome.

Re: Why even the rich should worry about income inequality

I have been discussing/debating this issue with several people and find the situation disturbing to say the least. This video on income inequality started my thinking:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

After watching that I've been thinking more about a reasonable solution to help the poorest in our society.. As always, my line of reasoning breaks down when confronting the wall of income redistribution - how is it right to demand a portion of someone's income in a free society? Of course, how is it right to demand the purchase of healthcare or the allocation of your electrical outlets when building a house? We've strayed considerably from what I'd consider to be the foundations of our free society but as Mr. Obama has stated previously, "when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody."

On the heels of a recent Swiss vote to give every citizen $2,800 per month, I'm wondering if we couldn't eliminate social security, food stamps and unemployment in the US by doing something similar. Perhaps I'm becoming some sort of libertarian socialist hybrid but here's a quick thought..

2012 social security outlays about $768 billion or $64 billion per month

Food stamp program $80 billion annually or $6.6 billion monthly

Unemployment $520 billion annually or $43 billion per month

Grand total, $113.6 billion per month.

My initial research shows that approximately 45 million households are currently making less than 35,000 per year which would amount to $90 billion per month using the $2,000 model. Considerably less than the current $113 billion/month. With this scenario we could eliminate social security, food stamps and unemployment - Is this a bad idea? For those over 65 making more than $35k per year I'm inclined to say "tough toogies" but perhaps we could look at some sort of tax freedom scenario to offset their contributions to social security over the years - no income tax, no sales tax etc.

Americans are by nature a generous group - giving more than other nations since such things have been recorded, but in my mind, there's a great distinction to be made between choice and mandate. Obviously safety nets need to be in place but I'd much prefer to raise the standards of the poorest rather than confiscate the incomes of the most successful. I'm sure there's a balance to be struck there but a quick look at the taxes paid by the various income groups in our country shows clearly where the bulk of that burden currently rests. Perhaps we could dial back some of our more 'imperialistic' gyrations or bring back something like the WPA for this century but I'm uncomfortable with the concept of a gov't run Robin Hood economic policy - particularly given the inability of our leaders to exhibit any sort of fiscal restraint. Before our gov't starts to dictate such policies, I'd prefer they developed a realistic approach to our out of control spending habits or maybe they could come up with a long term plan that would address the problems we'll face once the fed stops printing money like there's no tomorrow. I know Bernanke has made a superficial gesture towards that end as he has one foot out the door but Yellen seems to support running the printing presses at full steam.. I guess we'll see.

Social inequity is certainly a concern that we should address but how is balance achieved if not at the expense of others? If only there was an equitable way to take from each according to their ability and give to each according to their need..

By the way, I think the concept of anthropogenic global warming has been completely debunked for some time now - just a few rabble-rousers looking to cash in on the carbon credit gravy train or take one last bow at the green alter.

Re: Truth and Consequences

Just trying to stay on point Henry.. Again, I thought the question being address here was "Am I just missing a passel of professionally scripted big lies circulated by the left?". I didn't address your comments about Bush because that wasn't the issue although I would agree with some of them. I don't think you addressed my Odinga comment either - or many others for that matter but that's not the issue here..

I use the terms liberal and conservative loosely with no malice intended - The 'hypocrisy of the liberal mind' references the never ending calls for "civility" and a "new tone" unless of course, liberals are talking about conservatives. To repeatedly use "teabagger" (have you looked that up?), a term many would consider to be a degrading slur, is something else entirely. Referring repeatedly to Rush as "bouncy bouncy Limbaugh" would suggest the same. I'm just not sure it's necessary. How does that help your argument?

I don't know the context of McCain being called a traitor but I have many reservations about Ethanol - particularly when people are starving throughout the world. The impact on engines, cost of production vs. gain, unsustainable/impracticable farming techniques, energy used in production vs. output etc. What that or the short skirts of the Fox News girls have to do with Mr. Gilbert's perceived lack of alarmist liberal emails is beyond me.

Re: Truth and Consequences

Henry, I get the impression that you don't care for Bush? Maybe the subtlety of your expose has eluded me.. For what it's worth, the general hypocrisy of the liberal mind notwithstanding, your repeated teabagger references would be highly offensive to many - not sure why the same rules of conduct and civility never seem to apply when liberals are talking about conservatives. Seems to me that people tend to criticize and besmirch that which they're most afraid of but maybe I'm misreading the words in this case.

To your points, I think the conspiracy theories run deep for both parties and tend to surface more for one side or the other depending on who's at the helm - or whatever puppet's strings are currently being pulled by the Illuminati? I think it's possible to question the viability of ethanol for a number of reasons w/o being in the tinfoil hat camp - same for much of the gun control ideas being bantered about but that's a whole separate debate.

That being said, I think I am in the NWO camp as it seems to be the only logical outcome for our species.. it would seem plausible that 'unseen forces' are at work behind to scenes to usher us into this new utopia. Unfortunately, we seem far to busy killing ourselves and accumulating things for this to be in our immediate future but that's not to say that a dedicated group of individuals are not working diligently to bring this about - whether that's with an all-encompassing, oppressive carbon scenario or some sort of Monsanto power grab remains to be seen.. come to think of it, I think the Busy dynasty was buying up one of the world's largest sources of fresh water in S. America awhile back so maybe that will have something to do with it..

Re: Truth and Consequences

Henry, I see hysteria on both sides.. once again, the question asked was "Am I just missing a passel of professionally scripted big lies circulated by the left?" and that's what I responded to. For what it's worth, I don't think the admin is "pushing" the birther issue but I think it's a convenient way to lump many who are critical of Obama into the same category. Birthers, racists, haters of women & children.. just your typical portrait of today's Republican.
Black helicopters.. That's a Bush conspiracy isn't it?

Re: Truth and Consequences

Thank you Henry, I'm glad you were amazed at the 10 minutes I took to reply to your post this morning.. Not a huge accomplishment given that I seem to be waking at 5:00am these days. As usual, I think we've devolved into a state of futility with all of this. While I give you kudos for at least hinting at some "exaggeration" on both sides of the aisles, I think you're unable to see laughable examples of left-wing hysteria because you're unable to see examples of left-wing hysteria.. it's merely an exaggeration of core truths for those on the left. Did you happen to look at Bob's Conservapedia link?

I'm not a birther by any means but if I was standing knee deep in circumstantial evidence, I'd be inclined to at least raise an eyebrow.. The Obama admin could have easily laid this issue to rest years ago by simply providing the legal (not hospital) certificate and silencing this nonsense once and for all. Could it be that they also like to use the birther crutch as a means to push any and all who may dare to criticize the admin to the lunatic fringe of society? I'm still a little uncomfortable with his campaign efforts on behalf of Raila Odinga, but I guess that's just more water under the mass grave ; )

There's always more of this stuff from the side out of power but perhaps you've forgotten all of the Bush conspiracy stuff of recent years.. his ties to the Skull & Bones and the NWO/Illuminati plan for world unification.. our secret motivations for the Iraq war etc. What's considered to be "laughable" probably depends more on your perspective than the actual truth of the claim.

Not sure how we got onto short skirts and fox news but what I appreciate most about shows like O'Reilly's is that there is almost always an opposing point of view offered and I do not often see that with the other networks. Given your comments, I wonder how much you actually tune in to the factor? Morning Joe is a staple in our house as well but I have little time for television these days and had to DVR and watch the Lions loss last Sunday over three different days..
\

Re: Truth and Consequences

Yes, let's add CNBC - that will balance the scales.. I did give several sources of left-wing propaganda Henry. We also see the same general themes echoed throughout the media. The problem is that most of this stuff simply reinforces the same old "lies" about conservatives that many have accepted as the truth year after year. We've heard them so many times from so many sources - the headline scanners and Jersey Shore watchers will seldom bother to discover the facts below the surface.

A post from Gary Aminoff listed the main points:

a) Republicans care about only the rich -- the top 1% -- and don't care about anyone else.
b) Republicans hate people of color and especially Latinos.
c) Republicans hate gays.
d) Republicans are racist.
e) It is the government that provides jobs.
f) Corporations are bad, and profits are very bad. Business shouldn't make profits; they should give any excess money they make to their employees.
g) Taxes are good; they provide the money for the government to take care of people.
h) Government should expand and take care of everyone in the country.
i) America, rather than being a force for good in the world, has been a force for evil.
j) Government has an unlimited source of funds.

Left off that list are a few staples of left wing propaganda such as Republicans want to starve children and the elderly, pollute the planet, kill women and wage war for oil.

I don't have a lot of time for this today but here are a few more quick examples.

Democrat fundraising emails: http://www.powerlineblog.co...

From the DailyKos: "Republicans offer details on plan to starve American citizens"

From Progressive Democrats for America: “You know, President George W. Bush had significantly degraded our international influence around the world,” she said. “We stood alone in the war in Iraq. We were roundly criticized and rightfully so. And today, we have 35 nations that signed the statement in support of the U.S.’s commitment to strike. … So President Obama’s leadership has rebuilt our credibility around the world with leaders that was decimated in the previous administration.”- Rep.Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D)

Rep. Louise Slaughter: “In 1994, people [referring to Republicans] were elected simply to kill the National Endowment for the Arts. The answer is definitely "Yes".. As to your other points, there aren't any popular liberal radio shows because they aren't.. popular that is. Not that they haven't tried.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

As to Fox News, there's also MSNBC, PBS, NBC, CBS, ABC, OWN, BET, FUSE and a host of others that offer a dramatically different view of reality. You've cherry picked a few examples of conservative press but the overwhelming majority of both print and television media lists noticeably to the left.

Re: Truth and Consequences

If you're conclusion is that only right wing sources are distributing misleading material, you must be tuned in to only one side of the equation. My facebook pages are graced with nonstop misinformation from groups like Media Matters, Moveon.org and a variety of "Democrats for..." type of organizations.

The propaganda mills are running full bore on both sides of the political aisle and the forest of truth is being clear cut by both R's and D's to fuel their factories of redistribution. For what it's worth, I think it's different for the D's because the media has been a willing accomplice for a number of years now. There's not a pressing need to reach so many when we're all inundated with liberal reinforcement throughout our days. The media may not often be guilty of outright lies (except maybe the "racist Zimmerman" claim) but their guilt stems from the sins of omission - painting only one half of the picture to give a misleading impression.

Imagine that Romney had won the last election and everything else was the same.. every "scandal" (IRS, Benghazi, Fast & Furious, NSA etc.), same "reset" button given to Russia, same "I'll have more flexibility after the election" comment, same unemployment, same Libya bombing, same economy, gas prices, food prices, same stature on the world stage, same perpetual finger on the military trigger and on and on. Surely any honest liberal or moderate must concede that we'd be getting daily stories touting our fall as a nation and our impending demise.

When a D is in power, the glass is always half full, when a Bush or comparable R is in office, the glass is always dirty and the fluid level is irrelevant because we're all sure that it's just full of poison anyway.

http://michellemalkin.com/2...

http://www.mrc.org/

The jury is still out on Obamacare but the initial signs are not looking positive.. Perhaps we could have reformed the current system and provided for the less fortunate without upending the entire apple cart.

Re: Benghazi Again

This issue exemplifies my fears for our nation.. we remain a 50/50 country with little hope of compromise in the foreseeable future. We were undoubtedly up to our usual black-ops tricks, sticking our self-righteous, capitalistic fingers into the darkest corners of the world with all the indignance and impetuousness of most 3 year olds toying with an anthill in the backyard. The Republicans pounced like hungry wolves on a carcass, the Democrats circled the wagons and doubled-down when the lights came on. Honesty, solutions, integrity? Nowhere to be found.

I used to be a partisan. As a youthful D, I picketed Burger King for their use of Icelandic Cod (killing dolphins), wore my Green Peace t-shirts, rallied against Styrofoam and generally shunned anything and everything that had to do with corporate America. As an older and wiser R, I became aware of the incredible media bias and hypocrisy that exists in our nation, helped organize TC's first Tea Party rally and generally came to loathe all things in the realm of progressiveness.

Now I'm just a generally disgusted Libertarian, hoping to soon drop off the radar (and the grid) to live out my days in the relative peace of my workshop as the world goes to hell. Surely we must prevent the brutality of the Syrian regime - or was that "gassing" the work of the Muslim extremists in conjunction with our own CIA? Thousands are dying by machete or bullet throughout Africa, thousands are starving daily throughout the world and within our own borders. We continue to print money we cannot pay for as the political theater "drones" on amidst episodes of Jersey Shore and Desperate Housewives. Keep the free phones coming and pay no attention to that little NSA behind the curtain. What's a few million Zettabytes between friends anyway? He's the bad guy, no she's the bad gal.. it's always them.

To your closing statement, I think we should blame the CIA, Hillary's State Dept., the incompetence/dishonesty of our elected officials, the corporatization of the media and the increasing complacency of the American people.

Re: The Scandal That Wasn’t

CSL, are we talking faces or vases here? How about the union money behind the D's? D Super Pac influence, George Soros, Buddhist Monks from China, buying votes with cigarettes and free phones? Given the current scrutiny/leaks/IRS issues, I'm not sure I'd want my name flagged as a donor to conservative causes either. Not defending, simply pointing out that politics is a dirty business and both sides play it with partisanship and an obvious lack of sportsmanship. Fair solutions?

I'm sure anyone opposed to the policies of Bush was also out to "destroy" him?

http://www.huffingtonpost.c...

http://www.hyscience.com/ar...

Re: The Scandal That Wasn’t

Henry, I think our ability to have a productive political discussion is best represented by the image below..

A small number of those 292 conservatives groups are admittedly bent on destroying Obama at all costs - even if his actions mirror exactly those of Reagan or the Bush dynasty in the past. A single digit percentage probably opposes him simply because he's half black (or is that half white?). My suggestion would be that we're seeing a surge in conservative activism because so many feel that the country is headed in the wrong direction and the gov't is taking liberties that continually cross the lines of constraint drawn by our founders.

Re: The Scandal That Wasn’t

Bob, it has been a great experience - I can only imagine what it would be like if we actually knew what we were doing but fortunately my father has been on hand to keep us in line. I have tremendous respect for renaissance men such as that who can dismantle a car, build a house, support a family on a white collar salary and deal with just about anything life brings forward - certainly beyond what I'd consider to be my skill level.

One thing that I find continually hard to deal with in this process is the ever present hand of the gov't telling us where to put electrical outlets or what type of heating we must install. I can understand that reasonable protections must be built into the process but it really has gone over the top IMHO.

Re: The Scandal That Wasn’t

"Sometimes paranoia's just having all the facts" William S. Burroughs

To your main point, I think the current American political system is dysfunctional at best.. It's difficult to label it "broken" as we're basically a 50/50 country now so some would argue that the system is working as intended given our present inability to compromise. "What we've got here is a failure to communicate".. We point fingers, blame the other side of the same political coin and throw ourselves willingly into unrecoverable debt as easily as we cast aside our freedoms for the illusion of security. Maybe you should do a piece on the NSA one of these days.

The money and influence behind politics today is disturbing to say the least but given our status as a relatively free nation it's difficult to begin to place restrictions on the process. It's also illegal to drink and drive but only when the two actions are combined. How do we determine when inappropriate influence has been exerted on the political process and who sits in such a chair of judgment? What's the alternative?

As to conservative targeting, from (http://www.theblaze.com/sto... "Twenty so-called “progressive” groups applied for tax-exempt status. Only six were flagged for additional scrutiny. Two-hundred ninety-two conservatives groups applied for tax-exempt status. All of them were flagged and had their applications put under a magnifying glass."
Curious that you didn't respond to my Benghazi comments. There was a time when I mainlined political news.. couldn't get enough of it From FoxNews to Msnbc, NPR to Am580 but now my wife and I are so busy trying to finish our new house before the snow flies that the only sounds I'm interested in hearing are the sweet pings when a hammer rings true striking a nail or the wind-down of a circular saw after a straight cut. I'll have to read your story on the Benghazi issue when time permits.

Re: The Scandal That Wasn’t

The Republicans clearly smell blood in the water with these scandals (or
"phony scandals" depending upon your political affiliation) -
unfortunately, they're conducting themselves with all the frenzy of
hungry sharks and the intelligence of jellyfish.. That being said,
Lerner taking the 5th and the subsequent video uncovered casts some
doubt on the veracity of the administration's claims. Apparently there's
much more to this than a couple of "rogue agents" in Ohio. It may be
claimed that liberal groups were also scrutinized but the
figures I've read suggest a greater than 10 to 1 margin against
conservative groups. Mere coincidence in an election year?

As with all of these issues, we're told that they're checking into it
and they'll get back with us - so far, they must be doing a lot of
checking because they certainly aren't getting back to the American
people.

Benghazi, on the other hand, is a complete cluster-"mess" and
demonstrates either the administration's absolute ineptitude or their
complete disregard for the truth. The weeks of ridiculous spin &
denial and the slow trickle of information would suggest that we are
obviously up to our old tricks on the international stage - or maybe all
"spontaneous demonstrations" now come complete with RPG's and
military-like tactics. Was the order to stand down given? Where was the President during this ordeal? 30+ CIA agents on site? Granted, I'm perpetually
skeptical of both the press and this administration but I think there's
obviously much more to these stories than we're being led to believe.
Whether we'll ever get to the bottom of them remains to be seen.

Re: Obama’s Definitions of Children and Adults

Good luck with things Ed.. It gets easier after a couple of weeks but if
you ever start to miss it, just bang your head against a wall for 20
minutes and you'll start to feel better. I'd always thought a more
conservative viewpoint (even buried within the blogs) would be of great
benefit to the Record Eagle. At the time, I wrote several letters to the
editors trying to offer a few suggestions and resolve what I felt were
minor issues but received no response whatsoever.
