There is definitely an undercurrent to a lot of these videos that portrays the right as hillbillies and the left as intellectuals when that's not the case. I think what disturbs me the most is that the partisan lines are drawn so strong between R and D, and much of the media is lined up directly behind them. You would think that with the vast amounts of media and social networking available to people these days, the public would be educated to analyze and make their own decisions. Instead there is a huge undercurrent of "gotcha" media, and we're screaming at ourselves over these inane topics. We're so afraid of people thinking differently than we do, when that should be something we encourage in the public discourse.

Re: Cash For Clunker Policy Is Crackpot Economics - Trebuchet's Tumblog

Physics minor...

Re: Giving up cereal

I think I'm going to do an intervention when I come over. The HOA cares big time what color your drapes are, but it takes them 8 months (at a minimum) to figure out if they want higher speed internet. At some point in my life, I'm going to join an HOA and vote against every single thing and introduce resolutions to disband during every meeting.

Re: New Year’s Resolution Round-Up - 3 Months Later

Blogging is now solidly in the fail column. Nobody goes and steals oranges en masse, but I bet there would be lots of high school kids who'd go and steal a couple plants in the middle of the night.

It may be urban myth, but I thought the federal government grows some for their use. I wonder how its handled in that regard.

R-FID would be key, as I'm sure they want to track every bit of their product. Do beverage companies do the same thing? I wonder if they see higher theft rates than other companies.

Re: Trebuchet of Emotion's Tumblog

I definitely agree with what you say about integration, and these light rail systems that are essentially just a line from one side of downtown to the other. Its a joke if you don't expand them. The vast majority of mass transit helps nobody who lives AND works in the suburbs. Its a good case study for economics, because you have to invest a lot of money to have longer distance commuter rail, urban high density rail, park and rides, car sharing, airports, and roads.

I'm very free market as well, I just think we've been very pro-road in the cities, where trains work really well.

Re: Trebuchet of Emotion's Tumblog

Interesting article. While I agree with some of what they're saying about the California line and the viability of long range high speed rail, I think that the Acela shows that there is a dearth of options other than the automobile for short-medium trips in high density areas.
http://blog.wired.com/cars/...

Localized rail/subway ridership is way up though. I laughed at the comment about the Seattle project being over budget. As an almost lifelong resident of Washington, any transportation project in Seattle will be over budget. They can't build a sidewalk without a $1 million overrun. Here's the rider stats for where I live:
http://trimet.org/news/rele...

Public transportation will always be heavily subsidized, but I think that we end up gaining in the long run.

Re: Trebuchet of Emotion's Tumblog

No, I don't know anyone who has died from anaphylactic shock, be it from peanuts or anything else. I'm sorry if my comment seemed crass.

There are tons of people out there with serious allergies, but there are far more instances that I have lots of experience with where allergies are psychological. We're trying to kill every germ in the world from the minute our kids are born, when piles of research shows that exposing them to dirt, grime, and different foods are the smart thing to do in the long run. Is it any wonder that kids raised on farms or in rural areas have far lower rates of asthma and allergies than everyone else?

Re: Life/Life Balance

I think being married actually helps me accomplish a lot of those goals. My lovely wife doesn't enable my daily cereal dinners, so when either of us wants to work out, the other person can make the meal. In addition, we sometimes get the pre-made meals, but then try to spice them up a little bit with some extra veggies or other added ingredients.

I still think that I need to increase my non leisure and exercise activities, but being boring has its advantages. Also the fact that I commute 27 feet to work helps me get my 8 hours per night.
