Because I feel that way about my access to institutional level theatre organizations but have been accused of ENFORCING elitism in my online life. And on the basic idea: how do we, as a fiercely hierarchical species create a non-hierarchical sub-society?

I will also say that 90% of the time in my (highly privileged) life much as in audience perception the elitism has been client side not server side and when I break through my preconceptions I have generally not been actually excluded.

Re: Count the Cost

Michael thank you so much for sharing. I hope that as connections build the center realizes that we're allowed to talk to each other and not merely to each other's radical fringe. A regrowth in kindness, a diminished gag reflex for any criticism and a rebirth for the progressive right would shore up defenses against what most people have branded the death of civility.

Re: On Being Right

I really appreciated your attempts for this moment to be constructive, it mattered. I took most of a year off because the cycling of entrenched opinions on everything was so frustrating. There is so little desire to build anything or talk bright spots rather than take pot shots.
This year:
Separation of the discussion between market and art.
Creating space for others in our space - whatever that is.
Acceptance of our role in a community and reframing our personal narratives to eliminate the idea that we are post apocalyptic survivors of an art depending on our every choice to survive.

Re: A New Year’s Diet for the Theater

Abbodanza!
May your year grant you rewards for your every effort.

in re Thought leaders and personal snark:
I actually think that this stems from the dual nature of the medium. I've been called out on several occasions for not being uplifting or edifying enough in calling someone out when I thought I was complaining to my friends about an idiot I ran into that one time. There is an expectation of responsibility on my part because I have an audience.

There is no divide (particularly on Twitter) between the personal and professional and there is a reticence on the part of stakeholders in the conversation to bifurcate them. Because I don't *want* to hold my tongue and not complain about that idiot I just ran into even though people are listening and it's the right thing to do.

I actually have half a post written on this very thing as I try to figure out my year. Talk more soon.

Re: Call a Thing by Its Proper Name

Andy,

That's actually the thrust of what I'm aiming for in the broader sense here. We're hesitant to trumpet the sandbox in lieu of talking about where in the industry chain we fit or what we produced that's gone on to bigger venues. I think it's true of MOST of the country and I think that if we talk about a communities' actual strengths in terms other than a launchpad to upmarket industrial success we can get a higher resolution image of the strength of our art not just our industry.

Congratulations on your choice of Pittsburgh, dive deep and join in.

Re: Call a Thing by Its Proper Name

I think there is a TON of collaboration going on in town. I think we lack a better system for finding one another to KNOW that we want to collaborate but it's very much a feature both inside the community and between the theatre community and the other artists in town.
[mostly I was leaving the collab talk to others ;) )

Thanks for taking care of my city up there.

Re: The First Rule of Fight Club

Well now I have to check out Nashville!

Re: NAMPC: Testing Ideas

Theatrix,
It's partnerships. You partner with the local college to have students test drive new plays in dark periods, or you partner with local small business to operate the R&D nights. And there are plenty of audience folks willing to pay to be on the bleeding edge even if is a little rough around the edges.

Re: Fringe: Shakes No More

Thank you for engaging the issue thoughtfully rather than blanket dismissal for "hipster lingo", it moves the conversation forward.

From your position you could likely add something of substance here, even in disagreement, rather than sniffing at what is honestly a reasonable opinion. I chickened out even in fantasy.

Originally the idea was to leave the Seagull set on the mainstage all season with Nina/Seagull running in rep on it, which meant limiting the commissionees, but that sort of got scrapped....

I think not only do we need to trust our audience but we need to give writers the keys to the big car (and space and designers) and see what the big dreams look like.

Mea maxima culpa.

Re: Well if you’re so smart

I think that's absolutely correct.
Statistical diversity wasn't my goal. My specific goal is diversity in voice and my three commissions are folks who would speak to gender, class and race which is something that interests me in response to the Seagull. (I would honestly probably swap out a rural voice for race if it were Cherry Orchard)I might swap Tanya for Adam... but I haven't read El Nogalar yet :)How would you specifically program such a season?

Re: The hip bone’s connected to the…

Bless that man for a sports metaphor: it is EXACTLY the same skill as moving without the ball. Dionysus in 69 largely achieved that while the reception for B. Beaver Animations was largely academic rather than emotional.

I think what works for the Rude Mechs is BECAUSE as you say they are consciously navigating the historical and present moments together rather than simply treating the performance moment as another text to simply remount.
Thanks for stopping by!

Re: While we wait…

Ship it over to travis@cambiareproductions.com

Thanks for sharing!

Re: You and you and nothing but you.

Oh Diane that's just awesome.
