Personally, I like individual notes or "harsh" teachers because it seems like you're getting an actual "tangible" result for as much money as you're putting into something. Having spent a couple thousand dollars on improv now, I feel that as a student i'm entitled to some personal notes, just to get the feeling that i'm getting my money's worth. I agree with what you're saying, especially about putting too much emphasis on them. But like I said, for me, I want these personal notes (and more notes in general) to ensure that i'm wringing $350.00 out of my coaches brain.

no, I guess I just don't see how like, multiple movie theater tickets and improvisational comedy membership cards are bourgeois. I can see, however, where you're coming from (possibly) by the fact that I have a tailor and health insurance, but i'm sure Zizek does too.

I certainly wouldn't say that i'm a diehard commodity fetishist or anything, and I absolutely don't read Zizek to impress to anybody.

What exactly are you opposed to in this post, and why in the world are you anonymous? I'm certainly willing to discuss this.

I guess my point is 35mm film is dead, 35mm projection is dead, and the wave of the future is digital. I don't mean CGI, or 3D.

35mm film is about 3,000 lines of resolution, and a new panavision camera is about 230,000 dollars. The RED shoots 5,000 lines of resolution and is only 17,000 dollars. We'll keep having better looking shitty films.

The best part of Avatar is how it looks.

Movies keep getting shittier and shittier. There isn't a film created now that is nearly as good as "the classic" films from the 20's - 60's.

You get people like Paul Thomas Anderson or the Cohen Brothers, respectable in their own rights, but still complete shite when compared to Bergman, Chaplin or Kurosawa.

Our expectations for what a good movie should be keep getting lowered because more and more shit keeps coming out. So as soon as a movie is slightly better than all the garbage out there, we disproportionately loose our shit.

You're right when you say there will still be "intellectual cinema" films, but they will be very shitty "intellectual" films.

If the world we are living in now is one where "Slumdog Millionaire" or a Wes Anderson film is someone's "favorite movie of the year," then it is certainly not a world I am enthused to be living in.

Which is why I use "The White Ribbon" when making my argument. That is a far better movie than say, "Antichrist" because it is completely timeless. I think that's probably the best film of the decade, no doubt, because the only thing you can compare to is, say, a Bergman film.

I think you're kind of proving my point. The only movies that make a lot of money are the bad ones, (i.e. Juno, Transformers, etc.)

The thing is, it won't cost 500 million dollars to make another Avatar. The bulk of that money comes from developing the technology, and, as we progress, technology becomes cheaper and faster. A very elementary example would be to think of the iPod that was around 4 years ago (when production began on Avatar) vs. the iPhone of today. That is such a leap in a relatively short amount of time.

Not to mention, as far as Hollywood blockbusters are concerned, it is much cheaper to shoot digital. The RED is 5k, as opposed to 35mm films' 3k, and the camera is about 250,000 dollars less.

The thing is, the technology James Cameron developed doesn't just apply to sci-fi, it could be used for anything. And pretty soon, the "youtube generation" (i.e., us/our peers) will not want to go see a 'simple' intellectually stimulating film. They hardly do now. People don't even like "Synecdoche, New York," which is a critically acclaimed masterpiece because they don't have the patience for it. They want sensationalistic bullshit like "Slumdog, Millionaire."

It's the same argument between the silent's and the talkies. It was inevitable.

Plastic Bag was pretty adorable. The director came out beforehand though and was like, "this is not an agenda film, it is not political or about ecology," which I found strange, because it obviously was.

The White Ribbon is the film you should be most excited for, methinks. It was absolutely the best thing at the festival, and probably the best film all year. It won Cannes for a very good reason.

I don't understand what you're saying. Are you saying that because Polanski raped some girl that his work is less-than great? I think art is all about outcome. People don't like Woody Allen because he married his adopted daughter, it doesn't mean his films are shitty because of that. Charles Manson killed a shit-ton of people but it doesn't mean he wasn't a fantastic musician. I'm all for you being against freeing Polanski or whatever, I just don't get what you're saying about his art or being a fan of him.

I love these. I have three pairs. one I washed right when I got them without thinking, and the second I spilled soda on. Then I decided they where still good to wear, and then about a month or two later I spilled coffee on them and figured it was about time to wash them. The third pair is black and those are still going strong without any washes.

All in all, great jeans.
