Instead of the man and his son having to walk down a road, they could be in search for land. The only catch would be that there would be a group known as "Smokers" that they would have to avoid so that they wouldn't die from second hand tobacco use.

Let me know when they make a book/movie about that.

Re: "I read your book you SOB!"*

hah, looks like i forgot to add my name. it's me schmitt.

Re: Petty breaked his phones.

there is nothing better than the "i-lost-my-phone-and-need-your-numbers-if-you-ever-want-to-talk-to-me-again" facebook event. i showed my appreciation on his wall, and i think you all should as well.

Re: How GE Controls Your News | McCon

Ahh, Brickman's tumblr is great: http://brickmpj.tumblr.com/

Come back Jess!

Re: Are You Broficient? | Schmitt

The Bro-Code is so important, it's actually a shame that it's not a required reading in high school English. Do you think we'll go back to the "radical" press? In a sense, haven't we already? I mean it's already pissing off the elites (major newspapers).

Re: A Study on Happiness: No Concrete Answer

Bryce, I couldn't agree more with you. I really do think we have the ability to choose how we feel, it's just a matter of training ourselves to do it. I like how you choose to word the question as "What makes YOU happy?".

To play off your example of the 3 people in the room listening to death metal, if I see you listening happily to death metal and McCon enjoying the Picasso painting, it is all too easy to think to myself "Bryce & McCon are happy because of death metal and Picasso, shouldn't these things make me happy as well?" But the fact of the matter is that neither of these things are enjoyable to me at this point in my life, and as much as I might find joy in them if I spent time learning about each of them, I shouldn't get disappointed/unhappy that I'm not getting any joy in the moment.

I really like the way you explained your thoughts on this topic. I'd comment more but I'm tired and hungry so I'm going to go grab food, haha. We will continue this soon.

Re: A Study on Happiness: No Concrete Answer

Interesting website David, and thanks for the comment. The Atlantic is full of great articles, and I'm glad you enjoyed the post.

Re: A Study on Happiness: No Concrete Answer

I can see how you think intellectualizing/rationalizing an instance of pain or uncertainty is more mature than burying an issue, but I believe Vaillant's definition of of mature suppression ("a conscious decision to postpone attention to an impulse or conflict, to be addressed in good time) could end up being a healthier way to deal with pain/uncertainty, if done correctly.

For instance, let's say your car gets significantly damaged while it's parked on the streets of Manhattan. You could instantly try to rationalize the situation (why was this damage done to my car, what is the reasoning behind this, why didn't I park in a safer area, etc.), which I believe would ultimately stress you out even more. Or you could suppress your thoughts and emotions, and just deal with the situation at hand (call your insurance immediately and make a claim, take it to get fixed, and be done with the "problem). The time to think about how you could have made the situation less risky is not as you find out you're in trouble, since you're already stressed out about what you're going to do next with the car.

This may be a dumb/random example, but I can see how this would play out in countless events throughout your life.

Also, to answer your question about the nation's collective mental health, it's hard to say. Personally, I think we're better off mentally now than we were back in the 1930s. Now before you quickly start ranting and raving about how much simpler things were back then, let me point out the "seven major factors that predict health aging, both physically and psychologically", that Vaillant identifies in the Grant Study:

1. Employing mature adaptions (this is pretty hard to compare historically)
2. Education (we're much more educated now than in the '30s)
3. Stable Marriage (divorce rates are much higher now, so I'll give this to the 30s)
4. Not Smoking (we're smoking less now, according to this graph (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/pre... that goes back to the 60s)
5. Not abusing alcohol (I haven't looked into this but I would guess it's pretty similar)
6. Exercise and 7. Healthy weight (although we're bigger than ever, we're also living longer than ever, so I give this to now)

Ultimately, I think we're more educated now than ever, and I think this alone makes us better off than we were back then. I'd love to hear feedback.

Re: Monday: 7 Types of Ambiguity | Tessa

What is a typical love story?

Re: How Posting Will Work

I'm not sure that this is going to work out if you're going to be bossing us around like this McCon.
