The other thing AVA allows is to use Zoom's built-in closed-captions. I've had trouble with Otter.ai -- for one, you need a separate window, and that window doesn't automatically scroll. Really wish I hadn't paid for the service.

Re: Amazon gives Apple and Google streaming devices the finger

Apple lets me watch Amazon Prime in iOS via Amazon's app. Amazon just needs to develop a tvOS version (not difficult to do).

Re: Rumors Swirl around Apple’s Upcoming September 9th Event

Their logo for the event usually has clues... the one seen here is square (like the Apple TV) and has the colorful synthesizer-like waves of the new Siri. Your knowledge seems to be gleamed more from conspiracy website and notorious "news" sources than from science.

I wonder if you think gravity is a religion, too. If I decide not to believe in gravity, can I fly?

Re: Greenland's Melting Ice Sheets: Climate Change's Disastrous Effects

Jessica,

I am curious as to where you get your information. You are correct in that summer melting along the margins of the Greenland Ice Sheet is normal. However, melting in what is called the "dry snow region" of the ice sheet – the area of the ice that is at such high elevation that even in the warmer summer months stays well below freezing – has not melted in THOUSANDS of years. Experiencing melt over the entirety of the ice sheet is not only unusual, it is extremely alarming.

The total volume of ice stored in the Greenland Ice Sheet, above sea level, is enough to raise global sea levels by approximately 25 feet. That would inundate most coastal cities and some low-lying countries. The ice sheet is showing signs of destabilization. This ice sheet, one of 3 ice sheets on the planet (Greenland, East Antarctica, and West Antarctica) could not form in today's climate. It is a relic of a climate which existed thousands of years ago. It only exists because it was here already. But it has remained in relative balance – summer melt and winter accumulation of snow are essentially equal – not in every year, but when averaged over several years – so the ice sheet remains at roughly the same size it has for millennia.

Now, human activity is changing the climate. This has NOT been disproven – I'm not sure what experiments you're referring to here... are you referring to Tyndall's experiments of the 1850s (e.g. http://earthobservatory.nas... ) which later paved the way for Arrhenius' hypothesis in the 1890s of the anthropogenic greenhouse effect (what we commonly refer to as "global warming") which was demonstrated to be underway already in 1938 by Guy Callendar?

This work is now 150 years old and has not been rejected scientifically. On the contrary, scientific work after scientific work has only expounded upon the principles that these founding fathers of climate science laid out.

And no one (except you, perhaps) is confusing weather – the INSTANTANEOUS state of the atmosphere – with climate – the EXPECTED PATTERNS of weather.

What we are stating, unequivocally, and nearly unanimously as scientists (in every country from every culture and background and religious and political leaning) is that climate (the expected patterns of weather) is changing. And it is changing forever (in the human time perspective, not Geologic time perspective, just to be clear). And that human activity is causing this.

Us people, as you refer to the thousands of unique individuals who have pursued a careers in climate science, are not all fascist (although I imagine that among the thousands of us there may be one or two fascists in the mix??). In fact, being Jewish, this is a hateful statement to use when categorizing me and my colleagues. So classifying us as people who cheered during the Holocaust is disgusting.

We merely study an important phenomenon and report on the findings. Is it our fault that people don't like or want to hear the findings?

If you went to doctor after doctor to find out why you were having some strange medical symptoms and doctor after doctor told you that you were allergic to wheat – a very important and large part of your diet – would you reject all of them, call them all fascists, tell them all (even the Jewish doctors) that they cheered during the Holocaust?

You seem to have some serious perspective to gain on this important global issue. Perhaps you need to get off the Internet and visit a local university library. They have a ton of good journals there.

Re: Greenland's Melting Ice Sheets: Climate Change's Disastrous Effects

Hi Jessica. This "dude" has a Ph.D. and M.S. in climate science, has been recruited by the top research programs in the world, is well-published in top peer-reviewed scientific journals, and is well-respected among the world's top climatologists and glaciologists. So how is he not a scientist?

This article was written by a journalist for a general audience so it does make light of Box's methodology, but I encourage you to read his published papers before passing judgement and jumping to wild accusations that this "dude" as you call him uses anecdotes and rejects the scientific method. Anyone who rejects the scientific method will never be published in any respectable journals.

I hold my ground that this is a great article for its intentions – to bring a small glimpse into climate science to the general public.

And Box's work has made tremendous contributions into Arctic Climate, Glaciology, Polar Weather, Modeling, Glacial Dynamics, Remote Sensing, Field Methods, and so much more.

Re: Greenland's Melting Ice Sheets: Climate Change's Disastrous Effects

Well-written article. There's definitely more to the story, as Box alludes to – the system is very complex – and that is why this work is so important. But it is great that scientists like Box are out there letting the world know how fast things are changing and how little the public is actually aware of the state of things.

Re: http://www.kevfoo.com/2011/12/Importing-Shapefiles-to-PostGIS-Consuming-Chicago-Open-Data/

Your blog has saved the day for me once again!
