I can see where you're coming from about the legal complexity, Jeremy - which is one of the reasons why my position on polygamy is less crystallised than on marriage equality for all monogamous relationships. You have summed up one side of the argument as I see it - so I'll advance some propositions for the other side.

First, aren't the challenges that the law might face in dealing with polygamy issues that the legal system has to grapple with anyway, even without polygamy in the mix? There are already family law issues involving children where more than two parents/caregivers are involved (e.g., grandparents, step-parents, the "other" biological parent/donor when a same-sex couple have a child, etc.). And at least some of the issues with assets/partnership are probably also similar to situations that don't involve marriage, but where a dispute over property or other dealings involves several people.

Another argument that I can see: criminal law prohibits some types of intimate relationship - specifically, it proscribes the sexual component of those intimate relations, e.g., incest and sex with a child.

Although bigamy is a crime, nothing in the criminal law prohibits people from having intimate relationships with more than one person. Given that there are no criminal sanctions for doing so, shouldn't other areas of the law (e.g., family law) anticipate that some people may choose to form this type of relationship, and that the law must then be prepared to deal with the consequences of this entirely valid choice?

The gay people I know* say they want to live a promiscuous lifestyle with multiple partners, so we shouldn't give any gay person the option of entering into a legally-recognised committed relationship with one chosen partner.

* Or at the very least, the ones I make up inside my head.

Thanks for the reminder about the goat, though - you've just saved me a Google search. I'm going to become my parents' social conscience - and as an added bonus, it means I no longer have to walk into shops and buy country music or Human Nature CDs at this time of year.

The end of your first paragraph captures the burning question I have about tim et al. Are they this dumb, or are they smart people who know how to cultivate an audience that is dumb?

These cherry-picks and anecdotes have no bearing whatsoever on the issue of climate change. We could counter with our own anecdotes and cherry-picks (e.g., the western USA has been experiencing very hot conditions lately) but it's no more robust an approach to the debate. The problem is, trying to actually discuss the scientific evidence is met with the same sort of mockery.

Oh, and Al Gore is fat.
