That's one of the major issues we're dealing with @outbrain; we are great with awareness and branding through our distribution of content links for marketers, but don't get credit for the conversion. Definitely an uphill battle.

Just curious, but what user contributions are made to Groupon? One of the biggest reasons for its success is the value relative to the amount of effort put in--essentially it's a yes/no decision made in private within roughly 5-10 seconds each day. Not sure it fits with the other examples...

I think you nailed it on the incentivization aspect. Google probably has some internal chart of AdSense revenue from splog sites vs. % audience switching probability....and as soon as the lines cross, they'll drop the hammer on them.
