I have the same doubt also. Either case, if we really decided to do try option 1-3, we will need all the help we can get to make it happen.

Option 4 is still ok. At least the community will have a meaningful discussion and our future direction is clearer.

The down sampled image is in raw bit format and need to be compressed again to store back to disk, which will cause image to lost quality next time it's loaded.
