security-wise, it doesn't really matter if browsers allow creation of new script elements. assuming you've included http://widget.com/thing.js in your page, the fine people at widget.com can change thing.js to contain any code they want. you have to trust widget.com in both the scenario where it can fetch more code, and the scenario where it cannot.

for example, the lijit search widget on this page could easily replace the disqus login frame on this page with a phished version, even if it were not allowed to attach additional scripts.

wow, very astute analysis. i love stumbling onto stuff like this (eg butterfield's blog pre-flickr) and seeing the ideas rolling around that have now congealed into a neat web thing.
