For all the community-building we do elsewhere, this is one area where work is needed. I'm glad to say today, though, that Angela Benton over at Black Web 2.0 has put together what's going to be a brilliant incubator out in Silicon Valley this summer highlighting minority-led startups. I'm glad Pencil You In was able to be a part of that!

Re: XX Combinator

I like this idea, but creating a program only for women who are 40 and over is, in my opinion as a 25 year old, just as bad as an incubator that either consciously or unconsciously excludes women. Why subdivide a group that's already poorly represented?

"Women who start businesses like to know what they’re doing, and be trained and experienced in it. That takes up our 20’s."

What about the women who are in their 20s and want to try their hand now? Ever heard of on-the-job training?

I'd get involved with something like this knowing that it was all-inclusive and allowed me to leverage my talents as somebody who can actually code. At 25, it'd be great to get involved with this to have someone with more experience in the world than me as a mentor even. Some of the women I have had mentor me during internships have been women in their 40s who don't write code at the moment, but were doing so at one point.

Re: Breaking News: I’m going to be a daddy blogger! cc: @LaToyaMsutton

This is AWESOME, Wayne!! You would think AT&T would be better suited to handle the traffic, but then again, my iPhone just dropped the call on my mom the other day--even with the full domino set of bars. I ended up being able to reserve one, but only by using the app which itself failed all morning until around 1:15ish.

Where is Verizon when you need them? :\

Re: Larry King asks Bill Gates: Are you jealous of Apple's success?

Right now, Apple is outcompeting Microsoft, "insecure software" or not: http://www.businessweek.com...

You can always want better, but if time locks you in...

Re: #28DaysofDiversity: @GwenPeake of @Ford

Right! I'm just really glad to see more people being brought out of the woodwork. All this sass and vitriol about who's done what for whom is absolutely pointless. If this is how black folks (I'm assuming Lacie is black) do on the web, then no wonder we're not creating the next Facebook or Google. I always say this and I'll say it again: slavery is over. We don't need to fight for massa's attention or approval. Let's stop tearing each other down. Seriously.

Better yet, go learn to code and create stuff. Really glad to see someone thinking about how we can bring Africa into the loop after centuries of having people take so much out. Sure, there's political instability and such in some places, but that's no reason to not be thinking about how to wire up the rest of Africa. Awesome perspective. :)

Re: Google Gives Voice to the Masses with Google Voice

Heyy, they're still not allowing users to invite other users. I'm impressed with Google Voice (obviously) because of the simple yet useful features it offers that somehow the phone companies don't. This is proof that sometimes the best ideas for how to improve something come out of leftfield. I think everybody will like it. If they let current users invite more people, I'll be sure to post some invites here. :)

Re: Google Gives Voice to the Masses with Google Voice

You can get a number specific to your location or a number that's available anywhere basically except the 212 area code (I tried for one of those). I've got a 404 number through Google Voice, but my original numbers are 910 and 202 numbers.

Re: Conferences and Events I Want to Hit Up for 2010.

Yeahh, I just definitely need to get out more. I'm done with school now, so there's very little excuse (besides $$$) to miss important events like these conferences. You can only do but so much from in front of a screen...

Re: Computer Science Gender Crisis

The downtrend definitely has to do with exposure before school. Any women I've known who have successfully completed a computer science degree (i.e., didn't leave the program before they finished) all had some kind of exposure to computing before school and were actually interested in it. I knew of one woman who was doing great in her computer science program yet left the program after her first internship after deciding she just didn't want to be in front of a computer all day.

The biggest thing really is exposure--especially in those crucial years leading up to college. As the odd case, I spent more time IM'ing people in high school instead of calling them on the phone. Before high school, a family member let me tinker around on their computer until I whined and convinced my parents to buy one for our house. Exposure is absolutely necessary...and depending on the girl, structured or unstructured time with a computer is best. I always did better under the circumstances where I was just free to tinker with the computer and discover what else it may be good for besides chatting.

Along those lines, there has to be some way to get girls to see what a computer can actually be good for besides the typical stuff. Guys figure out (somehow) that if they at least take up programming, they'd be able to make their own games and whatever else they want. What is the female equivalent of that? :\

Re: Warren Buffett’s bio “The Snowball” and lessons for startups

Have you ever read "The Four Steps to the Epiphany"? The author talks about doing what you've said, i.e., "...looking for a customer market, finding what their problem is, and only then making a solution to that problem..." It's a great book and I think it'd keep a lot of people from starting startups based on "white hot" ideas instead of things that people would actually get some real use from.

Re: Warren Buffett’s bio “The Snowball” and lessons for startups

Really glad that somebody took a look at Warren Buffett from a startup entrepreneur's perspective. People always think of him as somebody who's far removed from the world of startups and iPhones, but like you've shown, I beg to differ. His shareholder reports are full of prescriptions on how to run a great company and it's something we all could definitely learn from. Glad to hear, too, that pursuing so-called "boring" ideas really isn't such a bad thing. I knew this anyway, but it'd be nice to see everybody else go and liven up the mundane. How many people want more RSS-enabled, AJAX'd-out, add-me-as-a-friend widgets? Funny how *that's* what's becoming boring...lol.

Re: Obama Sushi

This is realllly great. Why use all these tools to assail a rapper nobody really pays that much attention to anyway (I mean, I liked "Push It to the Limit", but let's be serious...). If you're any good, people will gravitate to your stuff because they like your music, not because you put a video up on your Ning site insulting some rapper who occasionally puts out a hit lol. He couldn't beat Kanye, so he resorts to this. FAIL.

I personally am more of a fan of how Soulja Boy has used social media and everything. I'm not a fan of his music, but it's all a lesson in marketing. He's not off insulting anybody and trying to build a career off that. 50 Cent should call him.

Re: All the Pretty Faces…

Oh wow!
