Nebraska is a good example--Husker fans regularly drive from the western end of the state to root for their Lincoln-based team. Rocky Long has been the victim of poor marketing at UNM. The Lobos have essentially been an Albuquerque team. Advertizing overtures to the far reaches of the state to develop a bigger fan base have been weak at best. How many rabid football fans traveled from Farmington or Taos to see his team play? The excuse that towns and cities in New Mexico are too far apart to create a solid booster group, doesn't hold water--look at Nebraska! Paul Krebs needs to get some boots on the ground and unearth new Lobo fans. Start selling UNM merchandise and buy some billboard and radio space to promote the school's programs in outlying communities. Organize booster clubs throughout the state and fund a booster bus system to carry fans to and from games. Good programs also develop ticket/transportation plans for out-of-state games. UNM needs a new and stronger public relations image to put its football program on the map of success. The head coach can't do it all.</p>
