I have seen him speak (great) and enjoyed his TEDx Talk. Beyond those skills, he is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. This should be chosen for SXSW 2020.

Re: Help Your Attendees Make Friends—Not Contacts

Thanks for mentioning the BIZnet program at NTA. This was one of the greatest experiments I have seen a large conference undertake. They did away with the opening keynote speaker and created a peer to peer learning experience. It was fun to work with them and see how willing they were to take risks with something as important as the day one general session. It worked, and people felt they started the event with new friendships and a focus on conversations.

Re: Sales Tip 9: Mentors – Thom Singer

A mentor / mentee does NOT have to be older to younger... often it is peer to peer... and lately more common younger to older. But a coach (either life coach or biz coach) is a good option, but usually based on a financial transaction. My disappointment with coaches is when I stop paying there is no more relationship.

Re: Add Elements of Theatre to Make Meetings That Inspire

Joan - this is a GREAT article. The production and the choice of speakers who have a conversational and non "lecture" presentation style is so important. I recently was the MC at a conference that is the best produced show I have ever seen. From the association staff to their production company, to every speaker they selected .... they made the whole thing an "experience" (similar to what would expect going to the theatre). They even began each morning with an interactive game show that got people involved with prizes (and it got people to come to the front of the giant room and fill the front seats). It was they way they do "warm ups" before live TV shows.

Re:

Having attended SXSW over 12 times (and presented several times), I have some idea of what is a good fit .... Tamsen Webster is a GREAT FIT for SXSW. I know she is a strong presenter who has unique content that will have a meaningful impact on the audience. She is also someone who is always helpful to others, which means before, during and after SXSW she will be engaged with attendees. While there are many sessions in the panel picker, this one really should move to the top of the list.

Re: Improve Your Meeting Through Better Interactions

This article reminded me of a large event I once spoke at where they had the breakfast hour in the largest hotels instead of the convention center. It made attendees feel they were part of a sub community as they gathered in the morning.... They got to eat and network in smaller rooms with people in their location and then walk to the convention center together with the people they met. It took a lot of staffing to pull off, but for a big 2000 person conference they made everyone feel they were part of a smaller community.

Re: Want to Improve Your Culture? Don't Micromanage It

I really liked you take on this topic. Each event an association host will also have its own culture, too, and I have seen first hand that you cannot dictate to an audience how to behave or participate. "Interactivity" cannot be forced, and a leader (or speaker or master of ceremonies) cannot cram the culture down their throats. It is a journey, and you can (and should) to be a guide, but realize it will take on a life of its own.

I loved this part: "Canner and Bernstein advise. “Never let people think they’re owners if you aren’t willing to let them own. If you’re the real owner, say so, make clear that the team member’s role is to help you, and explain what kind of help you need.” Every committee should start their discussion about culture in an organization or at an event by reciting this quote!!!

Re:

Live events are growing in a world where some predicted the internet would mean less conferences and other gatherings. Tech has not undermined events, it is a boost to them. Since more companies host client events, employee events, etc.... this topic is a must have for SXSW.
