They'll be a great addition to your family, and they will, indeed, help you keep the insect and weed population down in your backyard.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Chickens will eat just about any scraps you give them (including meat), just be conscious of the fact that fragrant foods you feed them might just find their way into the flavor of the eggs they lay. Try experimenting with different types of food scraps to see what your birds have a taste for.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We got our two hens a couple years ago (blogging about it at &lt;a href="http://urbanchickens.net" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" title="http://urbanchickens.net"&gt;http://urbanchickens.net&lt;/a&gt;) and have been thrilled with the fresh eggs and bug/weed control.
