I have to agree with you. Birthday cards are nice but I am not sure they do much to increase my affinity for your brand. Reminders - got that covered; I am pretty organized. Newsletters - sorry, but my attention reserves are on "E". The most memorable and meaningful encounter I have had with a brand this year was the result of listening. I blogged about it a few months ago:

http://blog.creativeblogsol...

Good luck with American Express! :)

Re: Permission Marketing: In or Out?

Thank you for the comments. As evidenced by my post, I, too, agree that permission should be granted explicitly. After you receive a business card, it only takes a second to ask " I would like to send you information about my business, would that be okay?". Rejection is never fun but that is part of owning a business and the person who says "no" is actually doing me a favor. The simple and courteous act of asking leaves a great first impression. I'll remember the time you took to ask, and if I can't benefit from your services, you'll be top of mind when I encounter someone that does.

Re: Using a Business Page on Facebook

Thank you for your email!

I will be working limited hours and on travel until August 6.

I'll be checking email regularly, but may not be able to follow-up
immediately. Social optimization is one component in an arsenal of tools. I will tell you that all my social sites rank much, much higher than my static website.

Re: Blogging, Twitter Fading Away and RSS DOA?

Thanks for sharing, Nancy! You hit upon some very important points. Another thing I will mention is that these tools can be leveraged with a shoe-string budget allowing small businesses to compete with larger companies with more marketing dollars. I also agree that using a blog as a social hub is very important. The great news is that blogging is becoming much more doable for the small business owner with platforms such as Posterous and Tumblr. Also, there are great tools like Ping.fm that can help pull all these tools together and automate updates. And yes, video as well as audio can give prospects and customers a 360 view of your business and expand your pool of leads and prospects. Thanks for a great post that helped demystify the "how" and "why" of jumping in the social space for the small business owner.

Re: Social Media: Thinking Outside the Box

You are welcome, thinkabotit.
